A former student of mine recently moved to North Carolina. His school doesn’t have a robotics team, but he still wants to be involved with frc. In doing some research, 8833 is a team nearby that appears to be run out of a community center of some sort. They were a rookie team last year, and even won the judges award. Only issue is I can’t seem to find any contact info to pass along to him. If anyone knows if the team plans on being active this upcoming season, or if anyone knows of an email/contact for them, that would be greatly appreciated.
Or, alternatively, if there are any teams in the Mooresville area that are open to accepting a student from outside of their school district, that would also be appreciated.
According to the FIRST Website the current lead mentor for North Carolina is Fiona Last-Powell her email is [email protected]. This would be the best person to email asking for contact information or who you could forward the contact information of your student to to pass along.
You could also email FIRST NC headquarters at [email protected] to see what info they have on Buzz City. They were indeed a rookie team last year, so most of us in NC don’t know their situation or mentors very well yet. Marie Hopper and Casey Gentry at FIRST NC will know more and can certainly help get a student in touch with a team.
BTW, there are also two other community teams in Charlotte, Yeti (3506) and Bots on Wheels (4290) . Both are part of the Queen City Robotics Alliance and accept members from across the area. I’ll put in a little extra plug for Yeti, since they were our first pick at the UNC Pembroke event this year and helped us win our very first blue banner.
Yep, just found Yeti and Bots on Wheels, sent both of their websites/emails over to the student. Hopefully they like what they see and decide to join one of them.
Thanks for the help/suggestions.
FYI Yeti is done with recruiting this year. I do not know about bots on wheels though. Both Yeti and Bots work out of the same location.
8833 is a school only team although they do work out of our space here in Charlotte. We have 4-5 teams in the Charlotte area that are recruiting still.
They can reach out via https://www.queencityrobotics.org/ to find one of the teams of their choice.
