Just wanted to take a moment to mention a team that exemplifies FIRST ideals. 4055, NRG, was at Pine Tree this weekend. Thier third event (no chance of advancing thier district ranking) and they spent the entire weekend focusing on helping other teams perform better rather than improving thier own performance (which wasn’t bad either). There was a field fault, which had nothing to do with thier team (auto gear placed but not recorded, twice), and they stood up and lobbied for replay. No one’s fault, just the sensor didn’t record the gear placement and ultimately the right call was made to replay the match. My hats off to 4055.
The great thing about most FIRST teams. They will work just as hard for any other team as they would for themselves. You don’t see that in may other HS sports if any.
4055 is a class act. They helped us finish the field at Waterbury, we would’ve been in a bigger jam if they hadn’t. Lending manpower and tools instead of using it for their robot.
First off a correction, NRG did not lobby for a replay but was prepared to do so. The alliance was eliminated by loosing by 18 points and the auto gear was up for 5 seconds before auto ended and did not get scored. Orange Chaos was noticeably upset that they didn’t get scored for it but continued to play the match to the end. When the score was announced and they were eliminated we were very upset that a bad call was made and the alliance was being sent home. I was prepared to speak with Abby(the head ref) and FTA to petition for a rematch but they began having a discussion and announced that the match would be replayed after testing the sensor and finding it was indeed out of calibration.
We did make our alliance selection specifically to help others advance to NECMP. Team 58 is now qualified for champs and if we had won the event team 663 would have been qualified as well. With our team sitting at 57 points we knew that advancing other teams would most likely remove any chance of going to Champs, but that is NOT what FIRST is about.
We had more fun this weekend at the Pine Tree event than we have had all season. We weren’t even mentioned in the predictions and our alliance was able to go all the way to the finals. The northern teams are a blast to play with and they even called us the tropical southern New England state due to the then current weather. They even put up with our Connecticut style defensive driving on the field.
We are looking forward to another trip to Maine for Summer Heat, we just need to have Maine weather not the tropical weather we had last year.
Sounds about like the 4055 I remember. I don’t suppose you guys are planning another offseason run?
NRG is one of best groups of people you could ever meet. Plus, they have cool hats. We didn’t get to compete with them this year and it kinda bummed us out.
3236 Tri-Force would also like to thank 4055 for helping us develop our scouting strategies at the Pine Tree District Event.
They spent a lot of their valuable time on day 1 talking to us and really gave us some great advice on how to get better information from scouting and how to scout with the small team that we have.
Congrats for winning the Gracious Professionalism Award at Pine Tree this weekend! You deserve it!
