In order to lighten the load on the server, I have turned off a few of the ‘perks’ on the forums that some of you may have enjoyed. They tend to cause unnecessary load on the server, and any little bit can help.
The listing of people viewing a particular thread (at the bottom) is gone for a while, as well as the listing of people viewing a particular forum. You can still see this on the ‘Whos Online’ page, as well as the users detail.
I’ve also increased the # of seconds allowed between searches. It was 6 seconds, it is now 25.
I may turn them off once the initial rush dies down, but for now they’re the first to go.
Is there really more of a load today than yesterday? We already have a new record for online users (255, about an hour ago), and since 10AM EST: 54 new members, 79 new threads, 101 active threads, 561 posts. We’ve had 399,673 hits since 4:25am EST, also.
So this is what happens when Dave mentions ChiefDelphi and Brandon during the kick-off.
Brandon, is there anything we (the general user) can do to help out to minimize the load? Would temporarily hiding our sigs help much? If there’s anything some of us “regulars” on this site can do let us know.
Nope, the only thing you can do to help is not use the site … and that would be counter-productive. So, browse and discuss as you normally would. I guess one thing you (not you specifically, but you the users in general) can do is think twice before posting. Make sure what you’re posting is relevant and helpful. The miscellaneous ‘ok’ and ‘i agree’ or ‘i dont know but when i do ill let you know’ posts just clutter things up and take up valuable resources (server resources, and your resources … ie time).
