Ask any member of nearly any FIRST team that has closely followed the competitions and the major players for more than a year, and you will most likely receive a similar list of the ‘Veterans.’ I doubt there will be minimal to no argument regarding the following list, to name just a few: Chief Delphi, Juggernauts, Beatty, Huskie Brigade, CHAOS, RAGE, Truck Town Terror, Technokats, HOT team, and the Baxter Bomb Squad. Every year, these teams eagerly anticipate the moment of pure exhilaration when their robots are unveiled to eachother. Just as well the up and coming and other teams feel what can only be described as utter bliss when they are paired with, or defeat, the aforementioned-‘veterans’ ( just for clarification, in most senses I speak of matches in the finals, seeing how I do not recall TOO many seeding matches where the results caused mass hysteria to ensue). However, as a third year member of my local FIRST team, I never think ‘IF Cheif is there next year…’ I always think, ‘WHEN Cheif Delphi shows next year…’ My point being, there are just some things that I as a member of FIRST take for granted, one of those being that the veterans will always be there and always put forth a formidable robot. Alas, it is with the heaviest of hearts that I inform you loyal forumists that next year one of the veterans will be absent. It is my extreme displeasure to inform those that do not know that as of now the Baxter Bomb Squad will not participate in the 2001 FIRST games. Although many may be quick to point out that there are many teams that fail to return the following year, perhaps I am too young to remember such a team as the Baxter Bomb Squad, that encompasses every single minute aspect and detail of what FIRST is all about, a ‘veteran’, being absent from one year to another. I can only imagine the absolute chaos that would envelop, and the extreme disappointment, of not being able to compete against next years Juggernaut robot or Truck Town bot. And it is because of my refusal to believe that such a great team could be absent from FIRST that i beseech you fellow FIRST members, if ANYONE, ANYWHERE has ANY ideas or previous experience with such matters ( from my understanding, Baxter said there was simply not enough manpower to maintain the Bomb Squad this coming year, which is understandable seeing as we all know how much in debt we are to the engineers and teachers that put their time into helping us, those that do receive help from said adults) please let the Bomb Squad know, or the FIRST population assembled here know. FIRST is about competition, but as our past two years more accurately shown, cooperation. It is the sheer disappointment that fills me knowing that I will not be able to watch my teams robot go against the Bomb Squad ( or any other veteran for that matter) that drove me to write this essay-of-sorts. It just does not make sense to me that this team who just this past year won, correct me if I’m wrong, 1 regional, was finalist at another, made it to the finals at nationals, won the Chairman’s Award, (proof that FIRST itself feels the Bomb Squad was this year’s epitome of its ideals) and hosted its very own post-nationals competition ( the wonderfully organized Baxter Ozark Mountain Brawl) which they were finalists in, would be absent from future FIRST competitions. I remind you that these were only the superficial achievements of the Bomb Squad, there are also the accomplishments of being mentors to several First Lego League teams, the phenomenal support and interest held by their hometown, Mountain Home Arkansas, and the ever-present team enthusiasm. I, for one, will never forget the ‘BOMB-SQUAD’ chant always greeting their robot after a match when I oftentimes forget my own teams cheer. I also remind you that these are only the events and feats that myself, a member of another team, am aware of, and I’m sure there is a multitude of successes that the team has had that I have no knowledge of.
For those have made it this far through my ‘essay’, I offer what I’ve said here as not a tribute, as a tribute gives the sense that whatever is being paid homage to is dead and gone. I staunchly refuse to accept that the Baxter Bomb Squad will fail to return, and perhaps give us all headaches while strategizing against, in the coming year. Just as I cringe at the thought of never again going against a Chief robot, or being paired with a Technokats creation, or battling it out with a Juggernaut ( and most likely getting effectively pushed around), so do I abhor the thought of never again challenging the mighty Baxter Bomb Squad. Once again, I beg of anyone that has any insight as to what can be done, please share your thoughts. Instead of offering the honorary dues to a Fallen FIRST Giant, I offer this awareness post, and any further action that can be taken on my part. I also offer my best of hopes that I may once again see Team 16, the Baxter Bomb Squad, being a titan of the fields of FIRST.

Its very sad to hear this news about Baxter. They have been an excelent team through the years, and their absence will be felt. It seems like every year we are loosing another great vet. Best of luck to the Bomb Squad, and I hope that some way, we will see you guys back in the future

Later,

This is now the second great team to ‘fall’ to the pressures of being such a great example to all FIRST teams.

Mike B. and the Boston Edison team dropped out also after being a chairmans winner and teacher of the year.

The stress of maintaining a high level excellance is indeed very great and very real.

This very condition has been a hot topic at the tables of FIRST for several years. No clear answers have come to light.

Chief Delphi is doing constant revisions/reorganizations and ‘Thinking Smarter’ about our activities so as not to ‘Burn-out’ key people that make activities for our youth happen. But yet we try to maintain our high standard of activities and committment to FIRST.

I have heard from several other teams ( no quite so famous )that will not be competing this year due to job related/business stress. They also cite Money, Teacher time and engineer time as a major consideration.

How are other teams dealing with this real possibility?

What are you doing to survive?

Hey FIRST are you listening? Be warned!

We all need to TALK.

I am in SHOCK…no Baxter Bomb Squad.

It was a really weird thing this morning-
as I read the sad news, and was preparing to post a follow up, lightning struck near my house and the power went out.

I felt that this was symbolic of how I felt at that moment about what I had just read.

I just can’t express all of what I am feeling, and I know that if I, a member of a different team, am feeling this great of a loss, then the members of that team must be feeling endless emptiness.
I feel like a have lost a close member of my family.
To Greg and those of Baxter Bomb Squad- I speak for the Juggernauts when I say, we will all miss you this season, and as a former member I am saddened when our new members will not get to see the Bomb Squad in action- but hear about them only in a FIRST legend.
Even when you are gone you will not be forgotten.

To say any team ‘fell’ maybe is not the right words…

‘Graciously bowing out’ is maybe the way to word it…

In any case… as Mike said… there are teams every year that don’t come back for various reasons… yes, Baxter will be missed and I am sorry to see them go… but just as sorry to think of any team that isn’t coming back… just as sorry to think about any team not yet formed… just as sorry to think about all the students, teachers, engineers, corporations, and communities lacking of the FIRST experience…

FIRST in itself is expensive and time-consuming… it’s always been worth it to me… however, the former was never coming from my pocket…

I can understand completely why teams don’t come back or why teams never make it off the ground… 246 practically started anew this year and it was rough and often disheartening… worth it in the end… but not the easiest of roads to travel…

the fact is though… a FIRST team or event, and FIRST as a whole, cannot run on will or desire alone… money walks, talks, and makes this world spin round… we may not like it, but it’s true… without the monetary generousity of the likes of UTC, J&J, NASA, etc, we would never see a regional… same with Disney and Nationals… without the donations of Delphi, we’d never see half the kit of parts… the list goes on…

It’s a tradegy that FIRST is not so well known and accepted that money, time, and support would never be an issue with any team… that there would always been people and companies just waiting to give a hand… we could all rotate our mentors so no one would give up years worth of time and sleep… we’d all have multiple sponsors to ensure we had enough funds… but FIRST isn’t that big yet… so until then… the hello’s and goodbye’s of teams for those reasons will be many and each will effect this FIRST program…

I only hope that the Baxter Team and community never fails to forget that the purpose of FIRST is the inspiration of students to pursue careers in science and technology… and achieving that goal is still completely possible even without a FIRST team… just look at the wonderful people over in Plymouth… sure, 23 took time off of FIRST, but not off of FIRST’s mission… and now they compete in Electric Car competitons… just a little less time and money consuming… but serving the same purpose… and in the end… the kids are still being exposed to the engineering world… a great thing…

I intently hope Baxter will return in time, but until then, best of luck to them in their continuation to inspire students… and the same goes to any other team that may take some time off or learn that FIRST just isn’t the thing for them…

The Baxter Bomb Squad is not dead!! The prospects of a very busy 2001 just caused a realignment of priorities. We are facing two very exciting and important plant expansions starting Jan 1. Our Engineering & Maint. departments are completely booked. This is a good problem to have but it caused us to make some difficult decisions. Contary to popular belief, Baxter (Corporate) has not been a tremendous finanical supporter for a number of years. Most of our funding has come from local sources. That has been a strain and it didn’t seem right to use that money if we couldn’t give a total effort. I’m not talking about the robot but rather the time spent with the students.

We are planning to be back in 2002 and intend on staying involved this year. Some of our engineers and the senior students will probably volunteer at the events - maybe FIRST will even let me be a ref this year!
Maybe we will continue the tradition and host another brawl in 2001!

The X-Cats hate to see the Bomb Squad under pressure, especially following such a great season, so let us know if we can help in any way. With all the work you have done recently for your team and fellow teams, your community (i.e. FIRST LEGO League), and for FIRST, I, myself was very proud to see you win the big one this past year, so I’d hate to see you out of the fun for too long.

Best of luck in the off-season, and we look forward to working together again.

peace,

Greg:

It is hard to imagine a FIRST competition without Baxter Bomb Squad. For those who know this team, this message is superfluous. If there were three dozen teams around the country like Baxter, with the same level of community involvement and commitment that they produce, FIRST would be a household name. While producing a top-notch robot is a challenge, creating support and enthusiasm from the community is the more difficult task. Baxter has achieved both.

Well Greg, after playing against each other for five years, at least we were in the eliminations together(thanks to Truck Town). Only a relative few know how close we came this year. But the freeze-dried burger from the Brawl didn’t cut it. I’ve missed two Brawls because of business conflicts; I have no intention of missing a third. They shall return.

Wow. 19 years later, I read what was said about our team and I’m at a loss for words. Currently, we are in a suitable position, have more support now than ever, and always seek to help and improve the experiences of our students (myself included). We still attend Ozark Mountain Brawl, now hosted by team 3937 Breakaway in Searcy, Arkansas. Our students now help mentor 2 FLL teams in Mountain Home, and we try our best to open our pits and our workspace to anyone that needs it. Thank you to everyone that has supported us and have joined us in our journey through 24 years. We DO see your comments, and from the entire team from this year and the years before, I thank you.
