Below are a collection of questions that my team has compiled regarding the strategy of the game. Please give answers that are as thorough as possible, and number to which you are responding to. We truly appreciate your help in advance!
Regarding scoring…
We have some ambiguity regarding the entire scoring process beyond simply the points for various achievements. For instance…
a) If a team from the opposite alliance is in the process of herding of our alliances’s game piece and they accidentally bump our ball across our home zone, do we get the according points as if we had herded it across ourselves?
b) What happens if a team on our alliance has possession of our game piece and drops it after part of their robot, even if just a bit, has already crossed our home zone? Do we receive any points for this?
c) Does the game piece have to be removed from an alliance’s overpass for them to qualify for the 12 point bonus at the conclusion of the game? Or is is it a legitimate bonus if a ball simply sits on top of an alliance’s overpass for the whole game?
Regarding aggressiveness…
a) Can a team from our alliance knock a game piece from a member from the opposite alliance if they have possession of their own game piece and we manage not to get tangled after attempting such a maneuver? Would this result in a penalty? If so, how severe?
b) Can a team on our alliance block a robot on the opposite alliance if their team does not have an intention to pass us? For instance, is it legal if another alliance is close to their home zone and they are attempting to shoot a game piece above their overpass and a team from our alliance attempts to block them by idling in front of them?
Try to ground all answers from the rulebook, quoting the text as much as possible. Thanks again for all your help on this matter!
b) What happens if a team on our alliance has possession of our game piece and drops it after part of their robot, even if just a bit, has already crossed our home zone? Do we receive any points for this?
If the trackball has already crossed, no. <G10>, first sentence. Also see this Q&A.
c) Does the game piece have to be removed from an alliance’s overpass for them to qualify for the 12 point bonus at the conclusion of the game? Or is is it a legitimate bonus if a ball simply sits on top of an alliance’s overpass for the whole game?
No, it doesn’t have to be removed. I tried to find the Q&As on this, but couldn’t, but <G14> makes no distinction as to how the ball got there.
Regarding aggressiveness…
a) Can a team from our alliance knock a game piece from a member from the opposite alliance if they have possession of their own game piece and we manage not to get tangled after attempting such a maneuver? Would this result in a penalty? If so, how severe?
That depends. If they are trying to hurdle (<G42>), no (10 point penalty). Otherwise…follow <G37> and you should be OK. This one depends on the ref crew, though.
b) Can a team on our alliance block a robot on the opposite alliance if their team does not have an intention to pass us? For instance, is it legal if another alliance is close to their home zone and they are attempting to shoot a game piece above their overpass and a team from our alliance attempts to block them by idling in front of them?
See the definition of impeding in 7.2. That is a legal move on blocking the shot (provided <G42> isn’t violated), but you do risk an impeding call if there isn’t a clear lane or they ask to pass you. Another one to be careful on, as it may depend on the ref crew.
These two rules address this issue. If an opponent herds your ball across your finish line, regardless of whether they are in contact or not when they do so, you will receive the points.
b) The trackball is what matters, not the robot. Referring to <G10> again the trackball cannot be in contact with your robot at any point during crossing the line to earn points (from the instant it begins to cross to the instant it has completely crossed the line and is in the next quadrant.)
c) The ball does not have to be removed to qualify for the bonus. This is addressed in this Q&A
2.a) If they meet the definition of Hurdling:
HURDLING: The act of completing a HURDLE. To be considered in the process of HURDLING,
the ROBOT must:
• be in its own HOME STRETCH, and
• be in POSSESSION of a TRACKBALL, and
• be moving toward the OVERPASS and/or elevating the TRACKBALL so that the top of the
TRACKBALL is higher than the LANE DIVIDER.
Then they are protected per <G42>. I can’t find the original reference that extended the protection to trackballs as well (a team update perhaps) but it is mentioned in this Q&A. Beyond that I don’t see any reason that their trackball would be protected.
b) If you are just “idling” and you make no attempt to move and continue blocking and there is room to pass then you should be okay. The relevant rule is <G40>:
<G40> IMPEDING Traffic – ROBOTS shall not intentionally IMPEDE the flow of traffic around the
TRACK. A ROBOT will be considered to be IMPEDING traffic if it is preventing an opposing
ROBOT from proceeding around the TRACK. A ROBOT can be found to be IMPEDING
traffic if:
• the ROBOT is traveling slowly relative to the approaching ROBOT, and moving to
prevent the approaching ROBOT from passing, or
• the ROBOT is stopped on the TRACK and there is no clear lane of passage for the
opposing ROBOT, or
• the ROBOT pins an opposing ROBOT against an arena element, border, or another
ROBOT
Note that a ROBOT is not IMPEDING traffic if:
• there is a clear “passing lane” around the ROBOT, or
• the IMPEDING ROBOT and the approaching ROBOT are from the same ALLIANCE (i.e.
a ROBOT can not impede another ROBOT of the same ALLIANCE), or
• the ROBOT is in the process of HURDLING (except as noted in Rule <G43>).
