I’m sure you’ve all seen the devastation Harvey has brought to the Texas Coast. Many of us are fine, but some are finding themselves in shelters with nothing but the clothes on their backs. And, that gave me an idea:
If you live near/in Texas and can find/safely get to a donation center, you can help by providing (among other things) old team or volunteer shirts so people can have something to wear.
I know this probably seems like a small or insignificant gesture, but every little bit helps. And I think if you search you heart of hearts, you’ll find that you’ll be willing to spare one or two old shirts.
Thanks, and please keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
We’ve set up a GoFundMe for Houston area teams impacted by Hurricane Harvey. FIRST in Texas will distribute the donations to the teams in need. Please join us in helping these teams get back on the field!
The difference between what relief organizations want, and what they get, definitely comes into play in this conversation.
Without saying whether or not all (or any specific) relief organization will actually reject used clothes if you show up with clean, lightly-used clothing, I heard a radio story in which one group asked for only new clothes - The interviewee explicitly asked donors to only donate new clothing.
Bottom line: Just make a quick call to whoever you plan to donate to, and ask them what they are allowed to take. You might have to contact more than one group, or contact an informal group, like a Church, but I’ll bet someone will be glad to take anything that is still in good shape.
