About Abbreviations

Hello. I’m new to FRC and having trouble when going through topics on chief delphi, to be more precise, about the abbreviations. What are the most commonly used abbreviations here? Please let me know some of them.

Very much appreciation.

OK, so that one’s kind of older… but it does have a good solid if a bit dated list.

And someone has proposed an add-on to Discourse to provide mouse-over definitions for acronyms and abbreviations, but nobody’s gone there yet.

We really should get together as a community and update this. Pull/archive all the old control system acronyms and bring in all the new stuff. That would definitely get us a long way. There may be some tournament bracket style acronym stuff as well.

As far as an addon that would be HUGE.

I got some time on my hands… but i’m gonna need help

Oh thx!

Yeah gonna have to be a community effort.

I am not very knowledgeable on the controls and electrical side when it comes to acronyms, so hopefully others can help.

It would be useful to split it into “general mechanical/electrical/programming terms” and “FRC specific terms”.

Ford has the same type of thing. This would be a prime use of basic wiki software where everyone could update it - or at least a number of trusted users so you don’t end up with people thinking they’re being cute and poisoning it. I’d go so far as to say you could have definitions as well. Rev. CTRE. Limelight. PDP. Wago. etc.

I think it might be nice to add them to the FRC Glossary

I don’t think we would be opposed to a second glossary if the split up made sense.

That’s nice! It’s largely widely accessible as most teams would likely be using WPILib, and can find it.

The list is currently very software oriented, despite being labeled as FRC Glossary. Would you know if this is limited to software or if someone could add a bunch of terminology that is common to FRC as a whole?

Love it. That’s exactly what I was thinking of. I would include the acronyms in the same place, and their definition would be PDP - see power distribution panel

Don’t you mean Program Delivery Partner?

I think that would be great if it was expanded! It is very easy to create a PR. If somebody also wants to write something up but can’t figure out the formatting message me and I will help.

So far I think the things that have been added were so that we could use ability to explain words inline. See “telemetry” on this page. Basically added more out of necessity for other articles.

This comes up a lot and there were some interesting suggestions about a year ago:

So there comes a some sort of need identified long ago, it’s time to start a project or so on it. Don’t know if I could help tho, but I’d be glad to do something.

I went ahead and added a bunch of new glossary entries. Let me know if there are things you think we are missing.

If for some reason WPILIBs current glossary isn’t acceptable for anything but software terms (idk why that would be given the section on wiring as well on there) I could make a section on frczero ,seems like it’s a useful section and relevant to my goals at least. Otherwise I’ll point to the WpiLib set as well and see if I can think of any others to add.

Edit: didn’t realize @jdaming is part of WpiLib documentation. I’m gonna assume they are fine with it then

People want an abbreviation tooltip plugin? Your wish is my command!

(also, very likely coming soon to a CD near you)
