I have it on (very) good authority that this years kit will include some sort of air driven motor(s). I was told by an insider who deals with pneumatics and such, so it is a reliable statistic.
i heard about this too
but the efficency of the compressor being close to 30% and it having a long recharge time I doubt to be seeing it used in drivetrain
Well this year I hope we get to pick our own compressor, since most teams aren’t getting them now maybe they’ll lax the rules a bit.
from my opinion i dont think FIRST will really let us use the compressor we want to use…
Air powered motor… C’mon, where’s the gasoline engines?
Anyway, it would sound pretty cool though, like an impact wrench like they use in the pits at the races.
i dobut we will see new compressor rules this year mm but i like the idea of air driven motor
Air good. CO2 better. Compressor bad.
Air motors would be cool. I’d like to see one in the kit this year. I’d bet it won’t happen, but I will be pleasantly surprised if it does.
so it looks like my 6 motor cvt will have a change in design…
Air motors would be awesome. I havn’t really looked into it, but they would prolly have to be pretty small if you wanted to use them for any period of time. These would have plenty of applications, bc u can stall them as much as you want. Another thing that would be cool, would be pnumatic rotary actuators. They are sortof like pnumatic motors, but they have a limited degree of rotation. They are kindof like giant hobby servos without the position control(although position control can be accomplished with proper feedback and valves.). If you ask me, FIRST needs to look beyond plain old cylinders. There is sooo much more to pnumatics than that. At the very least we should be able to use rodless cylinders or multiposition cylinders.
the primary advantage of an air powered motor is that it would be small and very light compaird to an equivalant electric motor
so it would be the ideal for something at the end of an arm, or high up from the desired CG of the bot.
I agree, I think air-powered motors would be a beautiful advantage for a game especially if it’s something similar to last year where people need to build lightweight arms. The motors we have now are too bulky to put anywhere too far from the base without being a heavy system. At the same time, globe motors are the smallest we have to work with now, and they are great systems, but they don’t have enough umph for some applications. I think if we saw an air-powered motor of some sort come into play this year… teams would be able to try many new things, I think they could also be incorporated into drive systems to smoothly change gears or to turn a crab steering module. I’m skeptical also as to whether or not FIRST will really do this… but if they do, I think there could be MANY good applications of this.
you could also implement an air powered wrench or chisle
to take apart your enemies, er I mean opponents robot during the match.
wait! what am I thinking?!
sorry - lost my mind there just for a moment! :c)
Hmm maybe a tube from the robot to the human player so the human player can, ::Blow:: ::Blow ::Blow:: :: Faint:: new human player comes up… repeat
It would be a neat thing to have, however I dont know that it would be a replacement for a real motor in all cases, as theiese things tend to be air hogs, and we have little air to work with as it is. But you just gotta love the sound!!
