This sounds interesting, how does it work? Never heard of anything like this.

This sounds cool, echoing @Aaron_Li I would love more details so we can discuss it as a team this week

I’m curious though about the price difference between this and other offseason events. We are trying to be smart with our planning and by our math our team could go to Rainbow Rumble, Goonettes Invitational and Big Bang (all 3) for the cost of attending just this single event.

So what makes this one so much higher in price and what would we gain versus going to those other 3 events if we only had $900 to spend on offseason registration? I’m really excited to attend any offseason events this year, as we have never done one, so maybe I’m asking a really stupid question. Pardon my ignorance if that’s the case.

What makes AllStar Alliance Invitational different is that alliances are formed in advance of the event and the application is done as an alliance. 16 alliances (48 teams) will be invited to compete. Each alliance will play all the others.

Each alliance will complete an application that requires multiple sets of data from this season for each team in the alliance. The committee will review the applications and the data to select 16 alliances to be invited to the event. See details in the flyer.

We have planned a unique event that we hope will attract not only highly competitive alliances of three teams but also many spectators. We are also hopeful that alliances will include teams from across the US and around the world.

The pricing is consistent with the fee for Indiana Robotics Invitational which is $950/team.
The Chezy Champs fee is $1000/team to have a pit next to the field.

The AllStar Alliance Invitational flyer can be viewed here:

We look forward to seeing the applications!

How many matches will be played during qualifications for each alliance? I misread

  • Each alliance will play all others

Means 15 matches?

- Each alliance will play all others
- 16 alliances

A 16 team round robin is 15 rounds with 8 matches per round, coming to a whopping 120 matches. This is championship-level scheduling.

There are no backup robots/2nd picks, so if you break, you’re out?

I assume they’ll let you bring a backup robot given the massive increase in pit size but I would need confirmation

Since you brought us up - the quoted post is a bit misleading in portraying Chezy Champs as a similarly expensive offseason. While we do have a premium pit option, Chezy Champs is substantially cheaper for most attending teams and strives to be financially within reach for most teams. Every year of the event, we have had a mix of higher resourced teams from near and far and lower resourced often local teams.

Anyway, best of luck with your event!

Do you think maybe for a first time, experimental event, this fee might be a little high especially since the justification is the price of two of the premier off-season events (and one of them being a special bonus version of this cost)?

Also neither one started at said price and they both have an appeal and an advantage that this event does not, history and location. IRI was the king off-season and the true all star event unopposed for years. Then Chezy Champs came along and offered an alternative especially to teams on the west coast.

I feel like this event neither has one of the key appeals of an all star event which is teaming with new and exciting teams, since you have your same alliance. Nor does it have the advantage of location since it will draw from local teams in an area saturated with off-seasons and also geographically “close” to Indiana.

Now I could be wrong and this event is a smash hit, dozens to hundreds of alliances apply and everyone pays the fees and I look like a fool and I will be happy for it. The concept is interesting and something I would love to see succeed but I just don’t see it doing so at the above price point.

This is an entierely valid point and im not going to disagree with it at all. The price is steep and it could be incredibly limiting. However I don’t think that it is going to be an event where you arent going to see good teams. Kettering kickoff has been a historicly challenging event for teams and I don’t see this going any differently. Teams in southeastern michigan may be dense but there are some all star level teams over there. Do I think its going to be as competative as CC with teams like 1678, 254, 4414, and 1323, I hope so but it probably wont. It is a unique event in itself and I hope that is worth something to teams in surrounding states and teams in southeast MI.

Bump

This event looks super interesting! It does seem expensive though, especially for out of state teams who will need to figure out transportation and hotels and etc.

would we be allowed to bring a backup bot?

Can we get handicapping based on sum of team numbers?
Cool idea, we will see if we are interested.

Hey @KSHUKU - will the AllStar Alliance Invitational be held in the same venue as Kettering Week 1 and Week 2 (the Connie & Jim John Recreation Center) or will it be in the same venue as Kettering Week 0 (the Kettering FIRST Center)?

Is there going to be a playoffs after the round robin or is the round robin the whole thing? From my point of view I think there are much better (and exciting) tournament structures.

Here is one that I just made up that I think would be insane (and insanely great)

  • Use 2024 EPA to seed 4 subgroups (A, B, C, & D with the EPAs just counted off between them #1 → A #2->B … #5->A… #16 ->D)
  • Each subgroup plays a round robin (6 per subgroup for 24 matches total), the results of this round robin, divides the subgroups up into yet another set of 4 subgroups AA, BB, CC, & DD)
  • these new subgroups play a round robin to determine a new rank order 1-16 AA#1, AA#2, AA#3,AA#4, BB#1, … , DD#4
  • These ranks seed a " standard" (I use the term lightly) EIGHT ALLIANCE QUADRUPLE elimination tournament where you have an UPPER, MIDDLE, LOWER and “THE GAUNTLET” BRACKET.
  • No “First to 2” Finals, the tournament plays out until only one team has fewer than 4 losses - they are the champion! (Max of Tournament 63 matches). That means for example that the The Gauntlet Bracket winner will have to beat the Lower Bracket winner twice, then the Mid Bracket winner thrice, and finally the UPPER Bracket winner 4 times in a row in order to win the whole thing – may be close to impossible but that’s what it takes for an underdog to come out on top.
  • Every match now has “stakes” In a 16 team round robin tournament, there are going to be a ton of dead matches where either the results are either going to be lopsided or the results don’t matter to the participants or the outcome of the tournament.
  • Every Alliance is guaranteed 10 matches (3 in 1st round robin, 3 in 2nd round robin 2, & 4 in playoffs).

Will there be commentating like RSN at CC or FUN at Kettering Kickoff?
