Aluminum Wheels Tips and Tricks

This year our team is going to use the 6” 1.5” wide New Andymark Performance wheels. It will be our first year using aluminum wheels with tread, we used colsons last year. Does anyone have any tips or words of advice they would like to offer? Our current plan is to use 5/32” rivets to attach the tread. How often do you typically replace the tread?

We made our on aluminum wheels for the first time this season and we took a page out of West Coast Products page and are using 8/32 taped holes to mount our tread. It provides a really clean look and easy maintenance if we have to replace tread.

Rivets work just fine and can hold the tread securely. I would recommend either using a washer under the rivet head, or large head rivets, to try and limit the tread’s tendency to “pull through”.

Good advice from @CIM.

Rivets work way better than these, DNR:

I recommend making a jig of some sort, to size and drill holes in the tread, so that way they all line up the same way on the wheel.

What we have done is make a jig with a sideways hex to hold the wheel, if you clock the hex from flat by ~6 degrees, you can then drill two holes, flip the wheel and drill again. We made another jig to cut the tread to the perfect length every time and drill holes in exactly the right spot. This has given us very good results and our wheels are very consistent. Also, if you have the resources, I recommend buying the wheel extrusion. It saves a lot of money for your team and on the BOM.
