AndyMark CIMple Box CAD help

I’m trying to use the AndyMark CIMple Box for a CAD design, but I’m having a slight problem - The assembly I’ve downloaded from the AndyMark website has not mates on it, and the pieces rip apart when I try and move the assembly. Is there any way to fix this? Is there any other CAD of the CIMple Box gearbox where the parts are all properly mated? I’m using the student edition of Solidworks 2012-2013, if that makes any difference.

Thanks!

Whenever you import a STEP assembly file into CAD software, there are never any mates. You either have to manually add all mates yourself, or you have to lock the components in plate (right click on part in feature tree, select Fix in Solidworks or Grounded in Inventor).

If I am going to use a COTS part as-is, I typically save the imported STEP model as a single SLDPRT file.

I gave him three possible ways to fix it:

  1. Remate everything to its proper spot. i prefer this because you learn about the transmission and stuff can still be rotated in it.
  2. Highlight the assembly and mate as “Lock” this way you can’t move parts, or rotate shafts
  3. When the tranmission is inside another assembly change the part properties to being Ridged instead of Fliexible.
