If the correct terminals and tools are selected then insulated terminals will crimp just fine.
In this study we did tension testing on several terminal styles crimped over a spread of years by multiple operators. APP terminals are uninsulated of course, and the ring terminals used were insulated. The insulated terminals had higher variability vs APPs, but either results in good performance.

Ditto. Get name brand terminals, crimp them with halfway-decent tools, and test your process before committing it to your competition robot.
