Get ready to revolutionize your scouting experience with the introduction of Voyager! With Voyager, you’ll harness the full power of Scoutradioz at any competition, regardless of internet connectivity. Whether you’re at a bustling event with robust WiFi or in the depths of a competition venue with limited data or no reception, Voyager ensures you never miss a beat. Embrace the freedom to scout anytime, anywhere, and elevate your team’s performance to new heights with Voyager by your side.

Voyager is the name of Scoutradioz’ new installable Progressive Web App (PWA), designed from the ground up for offline use at competitions with limited or no WiFi or cellular reception using QR codes to transmit between devices.

Behind the name Voyager

The name Voyager was chosen because like the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes, your device will spend most of its time without connection to “home base” (the central Scoutradioz server) and periodically send necessary data back and forth when possible.

Team 102 used Voyager to great success at an offseason competition in November and now we’re ready to share it with the whole FRC community!

(Note: Voyager is an add-on to Scoutradioz rather than a replacement; in order to use Voyager your team needs to be set up in Scoutradioz)

No internet, No problem!

Forget about the hassle of needing an internet connection! With Voyager, all the essential data is stored directly on your device, allowing you to seamlessly scout at competitions, even in areas with limited or no WiFi or cellular reception. Instead of relying on constant connectivity to a central server, Voyager utilizes innovative QR code technology to transmit assignments or completed forms between devices.

Plus, when the Scouting Lead finds a spot with connectivity, data can be easily synced up to the main app, ensuring you’re always up to date. Say goodbye to connectivity worries with Voyager, your reliable scouting companion, even in the most challenging environments!

How to install Voyager to your devices

“Voyager” isn’t an app in an app store; all you need to do is go to the webpage & the ‘app’ gets cached on your device. Teams onboarded into Scoutradioz can try out Voyager at Voyager Website

We’ve been using scoutradioz for 2 years, happy to see voyager was finally released! That’ll definitely help overcome the issues of competition venues with poor service… eternally greatful to 102 for making this all open to other teams!

Welcome to the club, it’s really nice to see someone else finally giving this a try! If you need any PWA tips feel free to reach out!

How much data are you packing into the QR codes? A very early version of WildRank tried using QR codes to transmit data, but we could only pack a couple matches worth into one. That wasn’t enough for our needs, but plenty of other teams have had success sharing QR codes after every match.

BTW you can streamline this process by presenting the user with a dedicated install button.

@JL102 has done the lion’s share of the work around the QR codes. They can explain in more details, but generally - there are a number of tricks being used to compress the data prior to generating the codes… using LZMA compression, serializing the compressed binary data ala base64 but using a higher custom base, etc.

This is especially helpful when the Scout Lead is sending the pit & match scouting schedule and assignments to the Scouts (the match scouting schedule in particular can be a sizable blob of data, even with indexing tricks and the like).

In terms of the Scouts sending their data back to the Lead, we’ve found that operationally it’s just easier for the the Scout Lead to try to plan to scan all the scout devices after each match anyway (it’s not required but where possible it makes it simpler for the Lead to keep track of what data needs to be chased down).

And thanks for the tip on the dedicated install button - I’ll be sure to pass that along!

Thanks, I’d like to take you up on the offer! I couldn’t figure out if there’s a way to direct message people on CD’s forum software. What’s a good way to get in touch?

Sounds like a lot more effort was put into it than I ever bothered to, impressive!
