I am excited to announce a brand-new program coming to FIRST teams, the Dream Maker Initiative. The program will be focused on helping students maximize their post-secondary opportunities, whether it is a trade program, university, or two-year college. Consumers Energy, the Jackson Community Foundation, the College and Career Access Center of Jackson, and FIRST in Michigan, are joining forces to support our students. We will be hosting monthly webinars and have full time advisors that be available for students to work through their career and college planning.
Our first event is focused on high school seniors and their parents. Our advisors will guide them through the FAFSA application process and offer the opportunity for one-on-one help. Here are the details:
What: FAFSA Completion Webinar
When: Tuesday, January 26, 2021
Time: 7:00-9:00 pm
Who: Seniors and their parents
Register: Webinar Registration - Zoom
Trained advisors will walk the whole participant group through the FAFSA process first. Then participants will be able to ask private one-on-one questions to complete their applications. This event has limited space available, we are hoping to keep it just to Michigan based students for now. Our current plan is for future events include topics like:
- Help with college and post-secondary applications for any program
- Identifying potential career paths for students on your teams
- Deep dives on specific career paths and fields
- Job skills and how FIRST experience can help prepare you for your career
- Resume Writing and Interview Workshops
- How to identify and apply for scholarships
Our goal is to help set students that participate in FIRST up with a plan to pursue their career aspirations, no matter what field it is in.
