Alright, I’ve got a little bit of a curiousity factor with this posting. I’m sure you can guess the question from the subject. I’m wondering if there was a team (if any) that went undefeated in the qualification matches. I know that with this setup that the only thing that really matters is what your score is cuz if you win with a wicked low score then you don’t get many qual points. Which is better to accomplish, high scores without necessarily winning or having a wicked defensive robot winning with real low scores? So, I guess I’m wondering how many (if any) teams were undefeated in Q-matches and who thinks what is more important (high scores or defense).

Some engineer from team 308(Walled Lake) was talking to my team and said then went 6-0 and were upset that that they didn’t get picked. I felt really bad cause I hadn’t seen their robot and I felt that we didn’t even give then a look. Did anyone else have a diffucult time looking at all the other robots. I mean alot of teams had pamphelts but having a pamphelt and seeing the robot during a match are two totally different things. If anyone would liked to know, Team 308 finished in 24th place and went 6-0. I feel bad for the rookie teams and the teams that just went to the nationals because with all the team there I think it was tough for a rookie team or a team just at the nationals to sell their robot. And team 88 went 5-1

Yes, we went undefeted and failed to get a bid to the eliminations. We also beat some good teams, such as NYPRO and Clinton, Ford and Fraser, and the HOT Team. Needless to say that we were disappointed that we didn’t get picked up.
BUT: I should mention that we were more disappointed in not making the top 16 ourselves. We we in 7th place at one point and then had two tough matches that we had to win with defense. That made us drop to about 19th place. In our last match we had a motor problem. We ended up winning the match but what didn’t happen is what is haunting us. Our opponents both pretty much died leaving the playing field empty for us to get a perfect score, which would have given us the #1 seed. Unfortunately, just after the match started we had a problem with the motor that rendered us useless and we blew the big score and had to settle for only 80 points. That dropped us to 24th and the rest is history.
Anyway, all of the what-ifs are killing us now. But we’ll be back. Maybe we’ll show our stuff at one of the summer events.

Maybe you guys should read my post in General forum.
In this form of match, winning with the defense doesn’t count much.
It should…

The thing that I noticed was that no one chose any of the teams numbered 300+. I know 308 was 24th and 332 was in the high 20’s or low 30’s and my team (330) was 35th. There may also have been some other teams along our row that was in the top 48 that didn’t get picked.
I only saw 2 of the top 16 teams actually come by and talk to any of the teams. Maybe some of the top 16 teams could comment about how they scouted the teams, but I know one thing, several of the teams in the corner got gyped.

How we picked our alliance partner was very simple, On Friday night we finished in the # 1 spot so we knew we had to get a list of atleast 20 teams, I watched most of the competition on the Newton field so I had a since of the teams I liked and the teams I didn’t. I didn’t see half the teams but I did go talk to team 330, team 148 team 100 team 89 and a few others. A lot of teams even came up to us. There were 6 of us who really made the decision for the 2 teams we were going to pick for the elimination matches. I wanted team 100 and then team 89, but I also liked teams 148 and 330, but with 206 other teams there not many people got to see their robots and they didn’t want to pick any robot they hadn’t seen. We were looking for a defensive robot that could control the puck and we got that in the two teams we picked. If they had a chance to see team 148 or team 308 then maybe we would of picked him but it was just so tough to see everything. Once again I would like to apoligize to team 308 for not even seeing there robot, any team that goes 6-0 deserves to be in the finals. It was my fault as one of my teams scouts to go see your robot and I missed it. Maybe things would of been different if I did. But that is another what if and everybody has a few of thoses.

Would it have helped anyone else if FIRST had given each of the teams a detailed stat sheet after the last round on Friday night? There was just too much raw data to keep track of!

The way my team picked our allies was that our drivers&coaches went around after our last match and looked at machines (i’m not sure how far they got but i know they did go to the back of the tent cause it was close to us) and they formed a list of teams that had features that interested them. In addition, the intelligence branch formed a list of teams that they’d seen perform well, fit the specs, and just plain liked.
we made a wish list of what we thought would compliment us best and used it to put teams on the list, this is the list off the top of my head:
-floppie-picker
-reliable basket
-pole clamp and puck climbing (both options for strategic flexibility)
-reasonable reliablity record
-not in the bottom 40 of the rankings (unless personal interview proved otherwise)
The Driver/Coach team made a long list, then the Recon Team made another list. The two compared & discussed then ranked the lists.
I know that we did not collect info on every team but we tried for a good sample. Plenty of good teams get shafted because even with 2 picks per seed, not all of the good teams get picked but hopefully the best get recognized by someone and go on to the final dance.

I don’t know how many undefeated teams there were in the qualifying matches,
but we were one of what I am sure were several such teams. Probably someone out there has the information to tell us the actual number of undefeateds.
