I didn’t know where else to put this post… so here it is.
I started this one because I want to know if anyone else has “designed” their pit. I know there were some cool ones at Nationals, and our team got sick of dealing with the mess lastyear, so we designed a pit this year. It’s very shwanky (nick-word) and a couple of us got together after Christmas to construct some of the parts. Everyone needs to check it out!
Umm… anyone else want to brag about their pit areas? (not the anatomical ones please!)
Last year at Nationals, we combined our pit area with Team 115 (we took out the barrier between the pit), and decided to “dress it up a little.”
We put down astroturf on both pits, brought in lawn chairs and sun umbrellas. Then we had a few of the team members lying around sunning themselves while others whipped up smoothies in the blender, and made popcorn in the microwave (both of which were passed out to anyone wandering by), which was sitting on top of the refrigerator full of fruit (for the smoothies) and sodas. The crowning touch was when we set up a mini-golf course, complete with a little rotating windmill on the ninth hole (the windmill was powered by a seat motor from the kit!).
Somewhere in there, we also had a robot. I think.
So the challenge this year is to see if we can do better. I am not sure exactly what we will do, but I am sure that it will involve lots of duct tape. We may not win the competition, but we WILL have a lot of fun!
Pits are for sleeping, and by golly I’m not forgetting my air mattress this year, that plastic floor in Florida leaves weird marks. So all you really need is Diet Dr Pepper, pillows and blankets.
If nothin else, we did have the highest flag in the pits at Nats. I’ve been told that people found where THEIR pit area with our flag. I dunno, anyone remember a huge VT flag hanging ?
WE constructed are shipping crate back in 1999 to function as both a shipping crate and workstation …it was the perfect thing for us with all the parts and tools we brought …its 4 years running strong !!

I will ask Humphrey if he wants to make the trip to Florida (and maybe the LA regional), and watch over the pit areas. Presuming that he does, I am sure that he would enjoy some bagels for lunch (flamingoes are quite fond of bagels).

Dave…who will sit in your chair while you’re gone??? Will Opus take the job??
Team 122 has some cool pit plans! In fact, I just got back 5 minutes ago from helping to build them. We are the NASA Knights, so we built a facade of a castle. We have two ‘towers’ with a joining piece between them. I was surprised (and very impressed) at the extremely profesional look of the painted-on “bricks.” So, any of you guys going to VCU, Philly, or Nats, look for the cool castle and that’ll be us!
Hey srawls,
Our pit will make appearances at VCU, Philly, and at Nats too. Even though this is the pit thread, got any pics of your bot? I’m looking forward to seeing you guys.
Hey there gniticxe! No, I’m just a poor programmer without a camera, but I think others on our team could post a picture or two (Tom?). Well, we had a great time with you guys in Philly and in the offseason thing in washington, we’re exited you’ll be at VCU this year too
Last year we had “The Tiki Hut”. We used my Easy-Up shelter and added grass skirting. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. We got a couple of team awards for it. We were one of only two teams that had an Easy-Up shelter.
It was also nice at EPCOT when it rained. The roof leaked over us but we didn’t get wet. We appologize to the teams immediately to our left and right for the water
We will probably do it again this year.
Last year at Nationals we had this cool spot light thing. It projected our logo on the tent ceiling. I’m not sure about this year. But look up anyway. We will have a peace sign sprocket.
Well since we are back from VCU I felt the need to post something on the pit post.
I am happy to report that half of our swanky pit survived the trip to and from VCU in the back of Lou’s truck. We just need to remember to bring some windex. The bugs splattered on the piece of side plexi-glass is kind of nasty. Hopefully we will be bringing the second part to Philly. I know It’s a go for Nationals but we’ll see a/b Philly.
Yeah Pit building Crew!!! Swankyness abounds. -Argghh Captain- (hand in shape of claw-hook)
we r going to set up a cool pit area this year. atleast that is the plan. very exicting. dont know exactly what it will look like though. last year our pit got a lot of use. we didnt have a very functional robot at first. this year we r hoping not to have to use it quite so much.
