Anyone interested in a webserver?

I’m curious if anyone would be interested in a webserver for ummm…free. You just would have to buy a domain name or use one of our free subdomains. Feel free to ask questions. Post or email me at [email protected]. TTYL.

what all would we be able to do on the server.

if it gives me mySQL, php, and a little bit of space i’d love it.

Hook me up…

Whats the capabilites of the server?

I or one of my friends may be VERY interested.

Ditto. I’m looking for a service that will give me that. Actually, even just php would be okay, too.

It should have just about every ability you can imagine (as we’re building, not the company that hosts it, and we’re having a professional company host it). PHP and all that should be in it as we’re looking at programming in PHP as well (as soon as we learn it).

Would teams be willing to donate to building a ‘super-server’? We’re trying to build our own mega-server and are looking for anyone with money or parts that they could possibly donate. It would be greatly appreciated and we hopefully could acknowledge you on the webpages and such. Anyone interested please email me or post. Thanks.

Hmm…

We’ve been using a temp server since our school district web server kicked the bucket… I’m curious if we could use your space and kick over the old domain (ct.syracuseschools.net)…even if not, team 891 (once we get our act together this fall) may be very interested in your offer.

Leon,

Is it going to be a unix (of some type) or windows server? I assume you have somebody who is competant to manage the server.

Are you looking to build a fast computer that is pressed made into a server (1 or 2 thousand) or are you looking to make a real server (scsi raid, redundant power supplies, etc) (several thousand, minimum)

What domains do you own?

Are you running your own DNS server, or taking advantage of the hosting companies?

For those people who don’t want to spend the money to buy a domain, but don’t like any of the ones that they provide, you can also use a subdomain of any of these: http://www.dyndns.org/services/dyndns/domains.html for free.

Aaron, it would depend on whether your school’s administrator would modify his DNS server to point that domain at the new server. Technically it can be done, be they may not want to do it for you.

This would be great, if it all goes through. Just curious, but what is your time line for this project (ie this summer, a year, etc).

If anyone needs information on the server or has a list of stuff you would need the server to do please e-mail me ([email protected]) or im me (Knightwhosays3) and i can try and tell you what were trying to get.

Also, Anyone that would be willing to donate parts, such as hard drives, motherboards with processor (if possible 1.5 GHz + with at least 1 gb of ram and capable of 3 gb).

 stuff we dont need:
    floppy drives
    cd-roms

–Tim

also i will be out contact with a computer for about 3 weeks (maybe a chance half way through) so if i dont get back to your e-mail i will try to when i return.

Just to let everyone know, Tim is the tech advisor for this server. He’s doing most of the work in programming and such and knows the specs on the server. I’m kinda the marketing/business person trying to offer this out and ‘sell’ it to people. TTYL.

It’s unlikely for sure…the webserver is actually on and running but in their infinite wisdom they have closed all ports to the outside world.

Thanks for the help tho - I am very out of my league at that end…

It seems like most of you need to go back and talk to your team before you commit to anything. So go and do so. The server will still be there in September (and we’re hoping will have actually improved by then). I’ll be around for the entire month of August for the business end of things and Tim will be back in mid-August for the technical side of things. Talk to your team members and find out what they think and then come back and talk to us. TTYL.

I’ll be up for a server. If you want to contact me, drop me a line at [email protected] (or PM if you wish).

Our team currently ain’t got spare computer-parts around (our only computer is 95 that is slower than you can imagine).

One question though…do we need to put an ad on our site, do you automatically put ads on the site, or what?

(Something I’m suprised no one has asked yet).

If anyone needs a server let me know. Running php/mysql linux gentoo 1.4rc2. E-mail me at [email protected] (Only for robot team usage) Just one of my trash computers I was going to throw away on a T1. It has about 20GB of space, something around that, 1GHz around, 256 or 512mb of ram.
