Anyone know what the "scorekeeper triangles" are about?

I’ve been spending the day figuring how I’m going to replicate the field, and one thing has me totally puzzled.

On each reef there are two “Scorekeeper Triangles” GE-25304, they are triangular pieces of black matte HDPE, but I can’t figure out why they are there or what they could possibly do.

There’s no reference in the game manual that I can find. The year specific diagrams show them connecting to the coral catcher brackets, but they don’t seem to have any actual function that isn’t served by the dome in the center of the reef.

They are labeled 11 in this diagram.

I’m pretty sure I can ignore the existence of these and just move on, but it never hurts to ask.

If I had to guess:

They’re reference targets for the Official Scorers to know where a piece is on the Reef.

For most purposes, they can be ignored, I’d say.

I think they note the “center” side for each score keeper so that the scoring is evenly split between two per reef. Safe to ignore i am pretty sure.

That makes sense, either marking the center of a scorer’s responsibility or the edge.

If that is the case, then good on the GDC for thinking that far ahead.

The manual talks about how coral has L1, L2, ect references for scorekeepers. I would think that they will have to score exactly where each piece of coral is scored at. It’s likely there will be 1 scorekeeper for each side of the reef. Those triangles are probably too show each scorekeeper which “branches” are theirs to score. (Between the triangles)

Reminder that there’s only one Scorekeeper; you’re talking about Official Scorers.

It also defines the setup placement of ALGAE shown in Figure 6-3

Figure 5-5 seems to show one triangle on the “C,D” scoring location side.

If a game piece winds up in the center, they might ensure it rolls to somewhere a robot might be able to attempt to retrieve it.
