Arducam USB C Conversion

Working with the Arducam ov9281 and ov9782, I found the goofy USB JST and USB A connector to be finicky. I created a circuit board to solder directly to the front of the camera to convert it to USB C. I’m trying to gauge if people would be interested in preordering / ordering this. I was thinking about offering a pre-soldered kit with the camera and just the circuit board. The solder connections are fairly small. I also created a case to be used with a locking USB C cable. I am still working on ideas and looking for recommendations for mounting.

What we have normally done is get a new USB extension cable and cut off the socket end so we can strip and solder the 4 USB wires directly to the front of the camera. This has been much more reliable for us than the connector on the back and the included cable.

We would buy this

Would definitely be interested in this.

+1 we’d buy a few. The latching connector for the USB C is a nice touch.

Would the board you’re selling be completely DIY or would the USB C connector be soldered on already? Very interested in the board, we dislike the jst connectors.

So thrifty now has the screw locking USB C cable if you really want to look for a reliable improvement. Though maybe that would be a mod for a camera case and not the circuit board.

I was looking for a reliable usb c cable that teams could purchase, however, it seems that thrifty only has locking USB C to USB C at this time.

The boards would come with the USB C connector pre soldered. Teams would only have to solder the 4 usb pins and the reinforcement joints.

Pre assembled cameras would also come with hotglued ribbon cables if the camera has it (like the ov9281) and the boards would be acrylic conformal coated. Then assembled in the case.

Fantastic! That’s what I expected. Very excited about using these on our cameras, the JST are not rugged enough for high schoolers :joy:

I really like this design! I definitely feel like there’s a use for having it secured well inside of a case too.

Redux also sells a locking C to C canle, though it’ll be out of stock for a few more days: Locking USB-C to USB-C Cable

We also have a locking case design that uses it with the Zinc-V for power. I did order some locking A to C, but the screws tend to get in the way of other ports on coprocessors, so we havent made it available for sale right now. In general I’m a lot more worried about the fragile cables on the camera side than the large USB A that plugs into the coprocessor.

I have ordered 250 pcbs that should be delivered in the next couple of weeks. I’m still working on the case design and going to test out some esd safe 3d printed cases. For testing I used this USB C cable https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0C7GKGBJW?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title&th=1.
