Arizona FIRST State Championship

So in one of my last years in Indiana FIRST we had a State Championship in the offseason it was really fun and gave a chance to get rights as Top teams in that state. Who all would be interested in an event like this after championships either starting this year or next year. Our team has been wanting to host an offseason event and would be honored to host if we choose to do so. I was thinking maybe the top 40 ranked teams in AZ. Just a thought and I think it could be alot of fun plus we didn’t get a chance to show everyone what our bot is fully capable of due to a messed up sidecar.

If this is done, it seems all Arizona teams except for 11 will be attending this since the Arizona Regional this year had 51 Arizona teams competing.

I understand that, I meant like we can only hold 35-40 at our school if it was held somewhere else like Hamilton High or at the UofA or ASU then there would be the chance to add more teams to it. I also figured in some teams may not be interested in competing in this off season event.

I’d guess that 4183 would be interested in participating in and helping run such an event. I’ll bring up the possibility at our next meeting.

I know Crush 1011 already hosts the Tucson Tussle (previously Robolympics), which is played on a regulation field with the standard rules every November. I understand that a State Championship wouldn’t be the same thing and would be a much larger scale, but just something to think about when planning the proposed event!

Well yeah i know about Tucson Tussle this would be like an event to be held in June or July. Also with in the next 2 years 4841 will be hosting a preship and off season event the off season event will follow the same guidelines and be somewhat like IRI (Indiana Robotics Invitational).

If this happens, Team #4111 Peace Love Robots will be there. Just post the details if you choose to host the event. This sounds like fun!

We pretty much close down robotics over the summer, since the teachers only work from fall to spring.

Westwood would definitely be interested in participating if this were to happen. Perhaps opening it to any Southwest/West Coast teams to make it more competitive? I don’t know.

We talked about that today at practice to like invite those elite west coast and nevada teams and maybe some texas too

Ya probably need to be a little careful with this, given the efforts to get FIRST Robotics recognized in Arizona as an AIA varsity sport (AZ high school sports governing body), with some form of state championship standing attached.

Now, maybe the plan should be to use the two AZ regional competitions next year as seeding tournaments, and have a third limited to AZ teams only to decide the State Championship. There may be the roots of a plan here.

I am all for it. Move it around the state. Get the Coconuts to host it up in Flag some hot June occasionally. How’s Sierra Vista in the late Spring? Give some of the rest of us some practice in getting out of town (but not to far, the teachers say ::safety::

Great idea, let’s do it.

Yeah we could do that I think Wisconsin and Indiana had like set point values for like winning a regional and chairman’s it sounds like a great idea to have this all set out for next year

I’d have to look at our student interest and funding, but there’s a chance we’d be interested. Would out of state teams be allowed?

I think we should invite any and all Nevada, California, New Mexico, Utah, Colorodo, etc teams that are interested. If more register/express interest than the event can handle, perhaps then teams could be asked to apply, sort of like how IRI is run? But there aren’t (to my knowledge) any Southwest versions of IRI, and Arizona might be a good place to host such an event.

I think that’s a good idea and no not to my knowledge either is there an IRI of the west. I would love to see an off season event like that held here especially with that type of caliber teams.

Out of Orbit has access to multiple venues in Tempe. More specifically, the high schools where the teams work from. Our schools have 2 gyms, giving a capability to host 40-50 teams depending how much stuff people bring.

I’m pretty sure that we would be good electrically, but I’d have to ask.

We could also talk to ASU, and see if they would be willing to donate some space.

Team 2449 is ready to help!

Hey guys,

My team only has 1 month of school left but would still like to enter this competition over the summer. Does any team know when, where this competition would be or how to sign up? We want to keep the fun going!

Thanks,

AZDevilRobot

From the looks of it, it might not happen unless some teams get together and start planning it.

The MSHSL State Championship is happening in 15 days, and there are specific guidelines for points, and it’s the top 30 teams. Bonus points are given out for completing Chairmans and being a rookie, and winning a Regional Chairmans automatically gets you in. I’m sure you can find the scoring guidelines easily and emulate them (although there are arguments it’s flawed).
Our State Championship takes place in one of the arenas used for our 2nd regional as well. To make it State-Official, each student fills out a guideline/rules sheet that complies with every sport at the state level, so it’s actually counted by the state.

I hope an Arizona championship happens soon! It’d be really exciting. Good luck.

The Minnesota State Tournament qualification guidelines are here: I believe they are similar to Michigan’s District setup.
