Photo was taken by Daniel Ernst. He has been volunteer taking photographs at FIRST robotics competitions since 2006. Most of his photos are robots from FiM, but he does have photos from FIRST Championships for robots out of Michigan. He also takes photos for FTC and FLL. I thank him for all his hard work for capturing all the robots and moments that has happened in FIRST. Here is his Flicker profile where you can find the photos he has taken.

Our team, as well as several other Portland-area teams, were approached by a Netflix studio in the fall of 2019 to see about using our robots in the show Trinkets. Our robot and several team members filmed for a couple days, and season 2 is out now, with robots featured in episodes 4, 5, and 6. There’s a couple good glamour shots in there, and here’s some of my favorites:
As far as I can tell, the teams featured (in approximate order of screen time) are:
3131 (their school is the primary filming location of the school, and their shop is the shop in the show)
2733 (as the protagonists’ robot)
2471 (as the antagonist’s robot)
1540
4043
2411
1425
Edit: it seems 7034 was also present but I haven’t found them in the final cut
A few more things I have to say about this:
The show does not speak for any of our team’s values - the teams were paid for the use of their robots, and the team members were paid for their time. I personally think the show isn’t great and handles some delicate topics rather poorly.
We had our drivers controlling the robot during filming, with the actors pretending to control them.
The scoreboard the editors chose is considerably worse and harder to follow than the actual 2019 FRC scoreboard, which isn’t exactly a high bar to pass.
We provided the writers with some of the jargon used in the show (the word “stingers” is the main example I have), although some of it seems to have been inserted into the script fairly randomly.
All this being said, I think the overall portrayal of FRC (and robotics in general) in this show has been positive, and despite showing some common negative stereotypes, the impression I got was that the writers were trying to disprove these stereotypes.
My team has lost to 2471 in playoffs 5 times since we were founded, and the only time we’ve beaten them outside of quals is in this show.
The students who went to this represting our team told me that our robot would be the villain’s, which I thought was fun considering our team name haha.
Now knowing that your robot was the protagonist’s it’s even better. I have fond memories of you guys bringing that robot to our practice space and getting way more practice than we got. I’ll have to check out these episodes when I get a chance.
