Assembly onshape

Hi,
should my origin point of the assembly be in the middle of the assembly?

Not necessary.
But it’s always good to make the top of your assembly point in the +z direction

thanks! if I already built everything is there a way to move the assembly to the origin point?

If nothing in the assembly is mated to the origin, you can simply drag the whole assembly around.
So orient your assembly by dragging and rotating, then go to mate connectors, pick fastened, then the origin dot and a face of the assembly.

Depends on the assembly.

For FRC robots I recommend putting the origin in the center of the robot footprint, on the floor.

I also recommend using “vehicle-space” where you keep the origins of all components the same relative to where they actually go on the final robot. There are exceptions to that for things that get reused in multiple places but it applies in a lot of cases.

For things that aren’t FRC robots, it depends on what you’re doing. Often I’ll put the origin in the center of the most important part in an assembly (e.g. the biggest frame member).

I prefer it to be at the midpoint of the bottom of the wheels. ultimately, do what is easiest, all that matters is that the origin point is consistent.
