Our team is using the window motors with the black piece that goes over the gear, and want to attach that piece firmly. We decided to drill into the side of the gear and plastic piece and plan on using a set screw or other such thing. But it’s really tough material. We’ve broken 5 bits on it. Any suggestions?

We’ve built two metal plates to sandwich the shaft coupler, shaft, plastic adaptor and window motor, so no setscrews or epoxy are needed. Just one key in the 5/8"shaft keyway and two bolts to hold the sandwich together.
In order to answer your question, it would be good to know the application. I am confused as to why you are afraid of it slipping off. If you hold the shaft firmly, why is it a problem?
We have it mounted in a fasion that works…

We aren’t using the keyed shaft, because we are using this to pull a wire cable. We attached a “barrel” to the black piece to wind up the cable. It will be mounted upside-down most likely, allowing it to slip off after a while.

You shouldn’t place load like that directly on the gear coming out of the motor, it should still be supported by a shaft, pillow blocks and bearings. How hard will you be pulling on this cable?
I would agree w/ the previous post (by the drive train guy on my team–kudos). The motor really stinks for lateral loads. If you mount the spindle into a bearing and then attach the motor to a mount, that would be better…
