Team RUSH will be holding our 2nd annual RUSH Regatta on August 22nd on Deer Lake, which is just outside of downtown Clarkston. The Regatta is a cardboard and duct tape boat competition which serves as an engineering as well as an entrepreneurial challenge for our students. Students are split into teams to build boats as well as contact local businesses for support for our team.
This year, we are holding an open division for anyone who would like to participate in the race by constructing their own boat out of cardboard and duct tape. Not all the details have been worked out yet, but I know cash prizes and other things have been mentioned.
If you are interested, please send me a PM and I will give you as much information as I can, or as I find out more details I will post them if there is interest. It would be great to see some fellow FIRSTers participating.
Seeing as how I’m from the wrong side of the lake, I won’t be joining, but I was reading through the rules at the bottom. I really enjoyed the “[instert schools] are not responsible for my own stupidity” line.
I read through the entry form, but there were no rules on the boats. Care to give a little better info? Can they be premade? What materials are we allowed to use? Do we provide our own materials, or is it done at the site?
They are pre-made, I can’t guarantee any form of cardboard is fair game, but I can’t think of any that wouldn’t be. Ask me if you have a question and I’ll find out.
Duct tape cannot be used as a structural component, only to join pieces of cardboard and seal seams and such.
One-Part sealers may be used to waterproof your boat. I know teams last year were known to use liquid nails, latex paint, or caulk.
We don’t want to cause any pollution or damage to the lake, so please be environmentally conscious when constructing your boat.
There are a few there rules I know of, but I don’t know the specifics so until we have the final updated set these are also subject to change. The updated rules should be released soon.
The rules of the Regatta are that you may use as much cardboard and duct tape as you wish, and any other non-toxic one-part sealers or adhesives. There’s no size limit to your boat either.
And IKE, I sent you a PM with some other details, hope to see you guys out there this Saturday!
As far as starting times go, the judging and presentations will take place at 8:45 for things like most money raised and best presentation of design until about 11. The races will start at noon and will go on until about 2 I’m guessing, but I’m not sure. I’ll try to find out and post the info here.
