Auto for reefscape

if teams are thinking auto already what are you thinking also my main wonder is are cameras going to be required for a multiple coral auto to work fluently.

I would go as far to say that cameras in this game for the auto period are almost required. Sure, you could through testing and iteration write plays that work good on your field, but without a camera to align to a tag I really don’t see how you ensure consistency across fields ( not to mention align to tag makes testing plays infinitely easier and also raises their ceiling)

They most likely will, because the only ways to get coral are the insanely awkward coral and algae starting pos which you’ll need to bump the algae off the coral. This is extremely unreliable and goofy. The other way (that i’ve heard but haven’t checked) is getting coral from hp in which case the coral can still roll a little farther or not enough for your auton.

yes it will be very awkward to do it but there will be one team out there to get a good auto down pack for it

Most multipiece coral autos from the hp station will likely not need to rely on the orientation the coral drops at.

Intakes should be built in ways to accommodate picking up a gamepiece in any orientation.

I mean the HP could drop one directly into a robot not onto the floor? Or am I misunderstanding what you mean

Are any of you planning to do algae in the auto? It earns the same points as teleop and requires shooting.

We were thinking maybe if we started in the middle, then we’d grab the G-H Algae, as doing more than your 1 preload coral will disrupt the other robots.

For reference, this is from Team Rembrandts cheat sheet (G-H is closest to the barge):

I reckon floor algae auto could be really useful to clear up space on the reef in auto. I also don’t think anyone will be grabbing the coral from the starting places on the ground

And thus it might be a very good option for a complementary auto that takes to coral marks gamepieces

Any thought onto aligning to the branches instead of the April tag and then offset? Path to on side of the reef and then align to purple pole through photon vision.

I really like that idea. The highly linear poles should be easy targets for classic CV approaches and the reef geometry is pretty perfect for introductory SLAM.

One significant caution is that looking upwards in competitions can be tricky due to stadium lighting. During Steamworks we had an auto that aligned on a ceiling light and fired a beautiful arc of balls clear out of the arena.

I feel like a set camera on the bot that looks at the reef perpendicularly, however that is going to be a lot of purple
