Went to download inventor for a new email account and found that the ‘design mentor’ role has been removed. There is student, educator, and IT administrator.
Has autodesk changed their support?

I haven’t had to set up a new account but I recall it being this way for a few years. Could you not just put educator? In your mentor role you are teaching students how to use cad.
We use Autodesk Inventory too but our accounts are tied to our school district accounts and more or less handled by school district IT.
I believe we have an educator account, but if I remember correctly I had to use a school email (like a .edu) to prove it. I’m not sure what the differences between the accounts are, but if you’re not associated with a school, you probably can’t get an educator account.
It seems the Design Competition Mentor role has been downgraded to a single named user. It is unfortunate as getting students each logging in to their own accounts is just another pain point.
For the last couple of years it hasn’t been too easy to get reverified under a non school email. Since 2023 I’ve had to submit an Official letter from the educational institution which was rejected this year due to Autodesk’s new ATS. After this I had to create a claim with Autodesk Educational Support where then they renewed my access.
I think I have an education account. My email isn’t a edu address, it is a team email. I have access to everything I need. I had have the account for years and it pretty auto renews. Knock on wood.
Chat support just repeated that the Design Competition Mentor is no longer eligible for the Autodesk Education plan.
I was able to verify my Autodesk account as a Design Competition Mentor back in October and now when I check it show that I’m an undefined
I think this a case that the right hand doesn’t left hand is doing. The third party administrator probably be told to crack down on licensing by some one unaware that they sponsor First. This has happen before.
Autodesk is still sponsoring First.
Autodesk-sponsored design competition participant (and, upon request by Autodesk, able to provide proof of such status) or an individual who provides guidance, advice, coaching, or instruction to competitors engaged in competing in an Autodesk-sponsored design competition (and, upon request by Autodesk, able to provide proof of such status) (each a “Design Competition User”), solely for purposes directly related to an Autodesk-sponsored design competition
Which is from the Autodesk web site.
From my reading it seems none school employed mentors qualify for a single user license.
Autodesk’s Terms of Use note that only mentors of “Autodesk-sponsored competitions” can use the software. At some point after September 19th 2024, FIRST (and the majority of the other competitions) was removed from this page: https://www.autodesk.com/education/competitions
Well. That’s unfortunate. Guess it’s time to go solid works.
I renewed access in September. But now it shows up as student access.
I saw that. I think it is a mistake. Maybe it worth an email to First support to ask them.
What I received from Autodesk Support:
Update:
The template in question: https://damassets.autodesk.net/content/dam/autodesk/www/industries/education/docs/autodesk-faculty-verification-template.pdf
I contacted support when trying to renew my license and they changed the subscription type to student for me as well.
Fusion is still listed as free for FIRST on this page:
Hey everyone, sorry about the issues with the Design Competition Mentor licenses. It’ll take a couple days with the new year, but I’ll look around and see if I can find some information internally.
Appreciated. Many teams rely on Autodesk Fusion for CAM. Every year I have to jump through arbitrary hoops and wait several days to prove that I’m associated with a robotics team and that my educational access needs to be renewed for a year. I hope a more permanent solution happens very soon, like being able to submit traditional license keys like Solidworks.
Alright, sorry everyone for waiting until Kickoff to get some information for you all, but it’s a pretty dynamic situation. The Design Competition User license is kind of going away in it’s current capacity, but all Mentors and Coaches that don’t have .edu
emails are still eligible! You can follow this guide here to get access to Autodesk products.
As I indicated before, this is an evolving situation so keep I’ll make sure to keep an eye out for changes and will be updating if I hear anything more. Please let me know if you are having any other issues or need anymore help, either here or on the Synthesis Discord.
