I am wondering if when in the autonomous period is active, if the points from reaching and crossing a defense are counted as seperate points, and are added together (12 for crossing) or if it is just 10 total for reaching and crossing a defense.
I do not believe so. According to page 31:
As I read it, if you cross a defense, you cannot also reach a defense for points.
If I CROSS a DEFENSE in position 2, additional DEFENSES are the ones in positions 1, 3, 4 and 5 are they not?
So if I completely CROSS a DEFENSE, then back up so my BUMPER is over it, I REACHED it as well.
I’m guessing there will be a Team Update that will change it like:
A DEFENSE is REACHED when, at the end of the AUTO period, any part of a ROBOT’s BUMPERS are within the opponent’s OUTER WORKS and the ROBOT has not CROSSED that DEFENSE.
That is how I read it.
I believe there is a gray area about backing up and crossing again during autonomous to damage it if we also believe we can both reach and cross a defense.
From section 3.1.3, you can only receive points for 1 REACHING or CROSSING.
Whether or not you can receive both REACHING and CROSSING is not specifically stated that I have read. Every time REACHING and CROSSING are mentioned, though, there is an “or”, so it is possible there are only points received for one of the actions. Definitely a Q&A question.
Upon further consideration, I am now of the opinion that you can only score one of REACHING or CROSSING points in Auto. Even if the rules do not clearly state that.
Else, there would be nothing prohibiting the ROBOT from backing up and completely CROSSING the DEFENSE again (and again and again? - how fast can you move?) racking up multiple points. Except that the ref panel software probably wouldn’t allow multiple entries.
Still, something for Q&A.
It is stated in 3.1.3 that you can only receive those points one time.
