Most of the schools were closed to day in the NW Chicago area because of the extreme weather conditions. Even Motorola closed officially (for the first time in many years) at noon today due to the weather.
We were suppose to have one of our classes / preseason FIRST meeting tonight; but it obviously was cancelled. I guess better to have this happen now instead of during the 6 week crunch.
How is it in Michigan right now? I heard it was headed your way. And it may get to New England soon.

Well, Ive always wondered what would happen if a hard snow season hit during the 6 weeks, or during Kickoff. Has it happened before? I know we’ve had some mild winters the past few years, but what about in the early years of FIRST, when winters were still a little hairy and we didnt have the Nino/Nina effect going on?
I remember last year when school was cancelled during week 2 and we still had our meeting anyway, snow or not…what do you think would happen if something hit really hard during the 6 weeks (or Kickoff? ::cringe::)?
Just curious (I swear, I am not trying to jinx it!!),

Jess. The latest rule just added to the ’ Sie H2o Bots ’ list of things to do in an emergency is, THERE IS NO SNOW, so continue building.
If School is closed… Build. THERE IS NO SNOW
If the state is closed… Build. THERE IS NO SNOW
If the country closes… Build. THERE IS NO SNOW
If all members croak… Build. THERE IS NO SNOW.
If the planet spins off its axle and hurles it`s self in to outer space… THERE IS NO SNOW
…SO KEEP BUILDING.

We had our school canceled for 3 weeks straght during the building period. But that just ment that we have to put our trucks in 4 wheel drive and we could work on the bot all day.

Well, when we had our budget threatened in our town a couple of months ago…one of the things they were going to cut next if it didn’t pass was the heat. They’d close all schools from Dec. 22 'til Jan. 22, to save $30,000 on heating charges…and we were planning on building at the High School anyway, as far as I could tell. Thankfully, it passed.

Most of CT (Known as ‘Waterworld’ for some reason to the people up in FIRST-Land) got a heavy icing over, which thankfully closed a ton of schools down here…hmmm, skating, anyone?

PS - On the budget issue, it was either cut the heat, drain the high school’s pool, cut bus transportation partially or completely, or (which is the most logical/fruitful choice except for union conflicts) cut the only non-state-mandated day of school, the 181st one, from the schedule, thus saving the town $60,000.

In the few cases in the past 3 years that I’ve been involved with this where the schools HAVE shut down, we’ve generally met at our sponsor with a ‘make it if you can’ rule…obviously not forcing people to go out into it, but getting work done with whoever CAN make it there…
And then of course, there’s the time that I had all 4 wisdom teeth surgically removed in the morning, and drove myself to the meeting that night…but that’s another story… =)

Well school is canceled for tomorrow already!! happy dance it took me almost 2 hrs to make a 45 minute drive (hat was 5 hours ago) and it shows no signs of stopping. Last thing i heard was 14+ inches and up to 40 mph winds. I think this may be the most snow i have ever seen. keep warm and drive safe all

Wow. That’s a ton of snow for southern Michigan. Up here in Houghton we have 18 inches on the ground and 51.6 inches since Spetember 1st. I don’t think snow days exist here, though. :\

I think you are close to right, Adam! In my years there (1981-85) I can only remember two days where things were shut down at MTU due to snow. The one I remember best was in March or April '84, and my car was totally buried.
Houghton makes our Detroit area snow look kinda tame… :))

Got you all beat…
When I was in junior high none of your parents were born yet…eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek
There were no computers, I had counting beads.
There were no calculators. just chalk boards.
There were no Robots, just slaves, bought in the market… Mom went for $2.00
We had light bulbs ‘1’ but no electricity, it hadnt been invented yet.
There was no sunshine unless you were rich.
Air was rationed, one gulp per day.
School was up a 10 mile steep hill, both ways.
Food was plentifull if you could run fast and your spear was sharp.
For xmas I got lego blocks…1
I did have new shoes but I had to share them with the rest of the family.
Vacations were trips to the basement for coal… 4 miles straight down.
Thats how old I am.
God help me…

You kids don’t know how good you have it!
When I started programming, we didn’t have all these sissy icons and windows…
All we had were ones and zeros…
Sometimes, we ran out of ones…
Ever try programming a control in nothing but zeros?
Did ya? Huh?
And when ya ran out of zeros, you had to use the letter O…
And don’t even ask about the obsidian end mills for the Bridgeports…

Wow Mike you lucky dog… you had ones and zeros, we only had ‘dots’ and ‘blanks’ when I was young.
And you had bridgeports with an obsidian end mill, we had to use our teeth to scrape shavings off our crude castings of bronze.
Nick.
