During drive practice, the cover for the battery came off. Upon closer inspection one of the plugs fell of and there was a hissing sound of gas escaping. Should we continue using the battery? Or replace it. The plug was put back on immediately and charges like normal.
I’d replace it. Did the battery get punctured? (It looks like there’s a hole on the cover)
If there’s a hissing sound, that is very much not good. I would treat it as if it was punctured and follow safety procedures for disposal.
The plastic on top got punctured, the black plugs you see, one of them fell off and there was a short release of gas
Uhhh PROPER disposal immediately. Don’t risk a fire or explosion. Hissing is hydrogen gas leaking.
i agree with everyone else here its not worth taking the risk of using a damaged battery.
The hot potato label is fantastic
You were cooking sufficiently hard that the chemical reaction created too much pressure inside and the battery vented off that gas–so much of it you heard it.
Independent of whether it’s safe to keep using it, I wouldn’t trust it when I could have a fresh battery for $50-75.
To AutoZone for a $10 gift card it goes!
Do they actually give gift cards for AGM batteries? O’Reilly doesn’t.
See new topic: what shall we do with them?
Any “powersports” battery. I’ve gotten them for barbie jeep and Vespa batteries.
Yes, I got 2 10 dollar gift cards from 2 batteries of dubious safety
Make sure to keep the battery in plastic containers, because metal, glass, and cardboard will all react with the acid.
That is unless you inexplicably have a platinum or other rather inert metal box just lying around.
ooh yeah, busting out st edward’s crown to transport my punctured battery!!
