Behind the Bumpers | 2056 OP Robotics

https://youtu.be/IfX5bYZahtg Team 2056 OP Robotics is absolutely incredible with their Charged Up Robot. Their entire build philosophy and process really shines as they detail their robot. Check out some cool custom gearing, championship additions and more on Behind the Bumpers.

Year in and out they have some of my favorite robots due to how simple they are. I did have a question I never got to ask just because I was so busy with our team about why they went with Spur Gearboxes on their arm instead of planetary gearboxes. I see several other elite teams do it and then I see others don’t so I have always been curious when I do see it and it’s not on some highly optimized ratio like what 254 seem to use.

So they can shim to remove backlash most likely

Shim what? The gears to hex shafts? Never thought of that.

I’m not sure I understand. I understand you have lash in hex shaft output applications but my understanding (which is mechanically limited in some ways) is that keyed output shaft doesn’t have the same problems if lash was really the issue being solved. Again, I’d love to know more about if that is the reason how did they go about it

Keyed output shafts can have backlash (play/slop), which is mostly based off a bad key, wear over time, or just improper key placement in the slot. Anyways, the MAXPlanetary really doesn’t have that much backlash and shimming spur gears to remove backlash would result in a similar amount of slop in the two systems. My best guess for why OP uses custom gearboxes rather than MAX’s is personal preference or they simply couldn’t get their hands on them, as MAXPlanetaries were out of stock for a large part of this season.

Realistically a MAX can get you virtually any gear reduction you want, along with 1 spur gear reduction afterward if needed. I would suggest teams that do not have experience building custom gearboxes to order MAX’s in the offseason, as they are far easier and less of a headache than the potential issues with custom gearboxes.

The MAX Planetary gearboxes are great, and they’re my teams go-to COTS gearbox these days, but packaging can be fun/interesting at times. They’re beefy units (which is great from a longevity/reliability viewpoint), but can be troublesome when designing some mechanisms.

While I’m not on OP, nor have I asked them directly about their reasoning, I could see it being likely that they didn’t like the packaging options they saw with the MAX Planetary (possibly in combination with them being hard to obtain), and a custom gearbox resolved either all, or aspects, of those issues.

I’ll also add, gorgeous and simple robot as always. It’s always exciting and inspirational to see what 2056 develops for the game at hand each year.

I’ve seen about the opposite, I believe 6328 did as well (might be wrong).

This robot really was amazing! 2056 robots have been a personal inspiration for many years - it was awesome to finally have the chance to play with yall and poke through the robot in person.

I feel very lucky that I got to see their robot and talk to 2056 at the Ontario champs. I was super disappointed to see them eliminated so early on in the playoffs. Super strong team and definitely one of my favourite robots from this season.

Always so elegant and clean, love to see it.

Out of curiosity, are you able to share the root cause of what caused the robot not to move in the first playoff match?

Load ratings were an important consideration for our team when deciding between planetaries and spur gearboxes (the safety factor was too low for them based on the calculations).

Honestly quite incredible alliance partner behavior if they refused it or smth

There’s plenty of teams at the Championship level who I would not need to do this with. 1 slip up in several record breaking winning streaks is an outlier of a data point.

Also, hot glue can still break off, retaining tabs can break, basically s*** happens even to the most prepared teams.

2056 was the most consistent team in Ontario and arguably the world this season, up until champs elims. They’re the last team I would personally need to check for reliablility.

This happened to one of our alliance partners at our DCMP in finals match a week earlier. Pain.
