Best sensors used in Rapid React

What were some of the best uses of sensors this year? What made the biggest difference for teams. For the sake of discussion let’s exclude the Limelight, or camera based sensors.

Revs color sensor worked well for our team and I’m pretty sure a lot of others as well. Auto ejecting wrong color balls was pretty popular this year to help out the drivers. This is all despite all the i2c issues as well.

Rev v3 Color Sensor was a game changer for us. Lifted the timing off of our Co-pilot’s shoulders for indexing the balls into the shooter, and it also allowed us to make a 2 ball auto which was a first.

We used one of the sensors referenced above for ball detection - it’s been very reliable. And they are 5 VDC and dirt cheap!

Beam breaks to automate our transfer and Rev through bore encoders for more precise control of our flywheels

We’ve automated our conveyor with an optical sensor at the start and a limit switch at the top. It uses some basic true/false stuff to reload the shooter automatically. The ball passes by the optical sensor in the wider part and rolls over the limit switch in the upper part.

The biggest sensor for us was the integrated encoders in the NEO motors. We were able to do RPM control on our shooter, automate most of our climb, and use path following in auto (with help from the NavX gyro, another fantastic sensor). This is the most encoders we have ever had on a competition bot.
We also use beam break sensors (adafruit 5mm) for ball storage and the Rev color sensors from the 2020/2022 KOP. Both have worked quite well.
Finally, we have a potentiometer on our hood. It’s worked quite well. This has been our best year for software ever, and the sensors we use have a large part in that.
