Best Teams NOT To Qualify For Champs 2017

What are the best teams this year that have not qualified for either championship?

I’ll start it off with teams:

525 - The Swartdogs have been a very strong team in Iowa for multiple years now, and this years robot was impressive once again. With a very good ground gear pick-up, it was quite surprising that they were unable to advance past the quarter-finals at either of their events. More shocking to me was that they were not recognized for their chairmans efforts, which have included major roles in getting both the Iowa and Shenzhen Regionals started, and a lot more!

3528 - Up Next had a amazing gear and climb robot this year. With an auto that was pretty much guaranteed to deliver a gear to any specified peg, and a consistent climb, its no surprise they were a part of high ranked alliances at each of their regionals. Although they were knocked out in semis at each event, they sure put up quite the challenge to the alliances that would go on to win each regional!

Glitch, 5854, amazing alliance partner at states and one spot away from going to TX. It was absolutely fantastic working with them!

999 the MechaRAMS

This is a hard one this year. Colorado is having 12 teams (a third of the state) go to Houston this year, a highly unusual amount for the state. Here’s who I can think of that I’ve seen around the FRC world. I’ll add more when I think of them.

1024
1501
2826

5924, hands down.

I was surprised that 1741 did not qualify this year, as well as a few Michigan teams, like 5460, 3688, and especially 2054

I’m surprised that 2826 didn’t qualify for worlds this year. They are a very strong team and it sucks to see them not qualify for two years in a row after being finalists on Einstein in 2015.

3624 definitely deserved to go. Solid auto gears and climbing, and made around 6 cycles a match on gears.

While I might be biased, I would’ve liked to see 5484 qualify.

We won our first blue banner and, by the end of State, we had an amazing machine.

Unfortunately, we spent our two districts trying to make our robot work, instead of coming up with solutions. Finally, before State, we gutted the entire thing. (Gear feed, active mech, shooter, hopper… everything but the lift and hang) We replaced it all with a much more reliable human feed and a floor pickup for gears, including putting in a new driver.

Our first day at State was plagued with connection issues stemming from some of the issues you see when you rewire a robot in about twenty minutes, as well as having a router go bad.

Day 2 at State was by far our best day all season. If we had this robot all season, I think things would be very different. But - we learned valuable lessons and the kids still had a wonderful time. Morale is always high, which attests to us winning the Team Spirit Award at every event we attended.

We hope to go to Worlds in 2018. The truth is, we got it together too late in the game and the point of this post was more to show off our favorite match we played.

Our last quals match at State, we placed 8 gears (including auto, and there was a point where we did two gears when we were out of sight) with our new and improved robot, as while as hung. (Our other two matches on Saturday were solid as well, but no where near as impressive as this.) It was an exciting match and I just wish we had learned faster

Overall, it was an amazing season and my first season in Indiana was amazing. I look forward to many more years with IndianaFIRST.

But teams that were solid all season I was surprised by: 1501 and 2054. I loved working with both teams and both were more than solid.

1405, too. I’m shocked their excellent gear running machine didn’t make it.

Thank you for the shout-out. We are really disappointed that we didn’t make it to St. Louis for the final Championship there, especially with it being just across the state. We will be watching and cheering on all the great teams we faced this season.

100% agree. We loved working with Glitch in Blacksburg and were ecstatic to have them as pit neighbors in Asheville. Its absolutely heartbreaking that they ranked 16th in NC, while both the 15th and 17th ranked teams are going to Houston.

  1. I would have also said 1796 and 2383 but they got in off the waitlist. 3624 had 2 finalist finishes and could have won both events.

A couple bots worthy of mentioning from Minnesota: 2883, 3184, 3883, and 4536.

All these bots attended 2 events and got knocked out of the semi-finals at each event. Will be sad not to see them at worlds because I’m certain they would have been great contributors to alliances in eliminations, but happy to see all 4 qualify for MN state.

5817 is a pretty good defender and HP cycler. I didn’t get a chance to see, but apparently a good shooter too.

Based on my data from long Island they scored an average of 3.4 teleop gears with 88% autonomous gears.

Its still definitely good but a far cry from 6 cycles a match. Something they never did at long Island.

They definitely hit that a few times at Tech Valley.

Cosigned. Glitch is the real deal.

I was also surprised that 4451 had to rely on a waitlist spot to get to Houston. ROBOTZ Garage had another strong machine, even seeding 1 at Rocket City, but couldn’t get themselves out of quarterfinals anywhere. (Twin 6366 made it in through both Rookie All-Star and by winning Palmetto as a backup team.)
