1807’s season so far has been the definition of an underdog story.

For the past 5 years we never qualified for MAR Champs. Then this year we barely qualified as the 54th ranked team out of 60 teams that went. We then won MAR Champs as the captains of the rank 2 alliance, going 17-1 overall.

I am going to be pulling for team 2084!

Made the finals in their first event this year. Made eliminations in their 2nd and got an award, but didn’t get back to the finals. Didn’t get picked at district champs despite a good OPR and high rank (just outside the top-8). Have never won an official event, despite making the finals multiple times. Now on Telsa in St. Louis.

It’s the exact same season that my team experienced, and so even though I’ve never met anyone from this team, I feel as though we have been “separated at birth!” Good luck 2084!

Strange how Team 604’s ELO improved by exactly 254, given that we partnered with them at SVR.

#conspiracy #coincidence?IThinkNot

Thanks!
I just checked the stats, and you guys definitely had quite the similar season! It sucks not to get picked at dcmp in those situations. Glad to hear we are in the same division! You guys definitely stepped it up this season too!

I think for Indiana it has to be the state championship winning alliance of 292 829 and 3176, all of whom many doubted based on their performances in district events as well as previous years. However, even greater underdog had to be 4272 and 1018, who took the district events by storm.

I have to agree that the state champions were a true Cinderella story. Not only did they pull the win at an incredibly competitive event, they played consistently at the highest level at the event, getting 4 rotors in 7/8 matches and an average of 425 (449 if you take out the lowest match). Truly spectacular gameplay.

2084 has definitely had a breakout year, well done and well deserved, also they are awesome neighbors in the pits. 3719 is definitely up there for awesome underdogs! After attending there first district championship they went on to rank FOURTH in a highly competitive field and proceeded to captain the third alliance to the finals! Can’t wait to compete with and hopefully play with them on Darwin

+1 for 1807. They built a simple robot that’s an effective gear cycler. I’ve had my eye on them since they upset our 1 alliance at Hatboro and it’s been an impressive journey. I’d like to congratulate them on their MAR Championship win and I am looking forward to playing with them on Curie.

2509 went from being dead last at Northern Lights in 2016 to captaining the #2 alliance to victory at Northern Lights in 2017, also winning 10000 Lakes on the way to Champs this year.

Us here at 3255 are a bit of an underdog. Coming from rank 32 at San diego and not getting picked for an alliance, to Arizona West rank 2 winners. On all of the Newton threads we were underestimated and people didn’t think we had much of a shot. Now, we have the 2nd highest gear average in Newton, and a 100% climb. (Other than one time when the other teams pilots never dropped our rope)

I think our improvement and us being underestimated as much as we were/are to doing as well as we are has been underdoggy.

3719 is FANTASTIC this year. I always have a soft spot for former alliance partners (Pioneer Valley 2015) and seeing them rank so high (and make it to FINALS) at Champs made me happy.

In addition, 3623 and 3654 both got their first blue banners, and both seem to be on an upward trend of competitiveness.

There were also so many amazing rookie and second year teams, and I think that they’re only going to make our district more and more competitive.

Also, not to toot my own horn, and I don’t really think we’re an underdog, but 1991 went from having its worst season in a while to having its best season ever, and if someone saw that coming, I would really like to meet them.

5499 and 5104 have both had breakout seasons IMO. 5104 just captained the #4 alliance on Turing, and 5499 is the 3rd pick of the #1 alliance on Roebling, an absolute steal that late. 5104 has never even been in the playoffs until central valley this year, where they captained the #8 alliance and made finals. 5499 had never been a captain or first pick before this season, and accomplished both of those this year, as well as being one of the best gear bots in the world in my opinion. Good luck to both these teams today on Turing and Roebling playoffs and beyond!

3381 hasn’t had the Cinderella story some of you are talking about, but we were started in 2010. Our rookie year, we got Rookie All-Star. Since then, we haven’t won a single award or even been picked for an elimination alliance. In fact, for most of the last eight years we’ve watched both of the teams we started ascend to Worlds, STEMpunk for Rookie All-star and Engineering Inspiration, Bond Brigade 5586 for Rookie All-Star. 5586 made it to Einstein. We have continuously taken last or next to it at every regional we’ve attended.

This year, my senior year, we placed 22nd at the Wisconsin regional out of 54 teams. We were very happy, even though we didn’t make eliminations. It seemed like a huge step up.

Then came the inaugural Seven Rivers Regional in La Crosse. We ranked 9th at the end of quals matches. We were the 6th seed alliance captain. And then? Then we won Engineering Inspiration, and we’re going to worlds. I don’t know about best underdog, but this has been the best senior season I could have asked for!

When did 862 become underdog? Many newer teams look up to youfor design features, this year you have a very good gear running robot. Goodluck in St. Louis.

  1. No question at all.

And I’ll say 973, too. They may have been good and not an underdog at their events this year, but I certainly didn’t expect them to win the entire thing.
