Our idea is to use a pair of bicycle wheels on our robot, and in the rules we saw nothing against it, so I wondered if Chief Delphi had anything else to add about it. ^^
Too big.
Well, that may be the case as far as conventional designs go, but I just wondered if it was legal or not.
Update 3 specifically permits tires:
<R72> J.
For the purposes of the FIRST competition, air-filled (pneumatic) wheels are not considered pneumatic devices, and are not subject to the pneumatic rules (although they must still satisfy all other appropriate rules).
There is nothing in the rules disallowing it but from a design and logical standpoint not the best choice.
sorry pressed the wrong button in the poll, there is no reason that your bicycle wheels would be illegal unless they damages the field in some way.
No problem! ^^ I had thought maybe the spokes of the wheels would be considered an entanglement, but just that can be modified.
if you guys have enough space in your robot to do both bike wheels and kicking you will be a great competitor because with those wheels you’ll have a lot a traction and no one other robot will be able to move you from your position…
Best wishes, and Good Luck
^^ thanks! To you as well!
I beg to differ. I’d reckon that the rubber on bike tires has a CoF equal to or lower than the AM plactions rubber. I know the CoF for tire rubber on asphalt is ~0.8, while the plactions on carpet (roughtop) is 1.3!
Secondly, using such large wheels creates a hefty mechanical disadvantage giving your robot less torque, thusly you’re more likely to lose a head on head shoving match. Also it makes shoving robots from their side even more difficult, and causes your motors to pull much more power because of your huge mechanical disadvantage by using such large wheels.
Love those negatively-worded choices.
