In the 2010 game animation, the field was bright green. This made a lot of sense to me, since Breakaway was based on soccer. The green carpet made the field look like grass or turf, adding to the theme, and making the game more intreguing to the crowd.
Despite this, all official fields in the 2010 season were carpeted in gray. Gray was more or less the same carpet color as most of the FRC games in recent years.
I can’t see why they didn’t make the field green. It wouldn’t have decreased visibility, since the average robot was more gray than green. From my knowledge, green carpet isn’t significantly more expensive than gray carpet, and there should be models of both colors with similar durability.
My personal opinion is that as awesome as Breakaway was, a green field could have made it that much better aesthetically. I also think the GDC should consider changing the floor color to a more vibrant one like orange or yellow in future FRC games, including, if it’s not too late, this year’s.

Because they have carpet in the proper colour. Why buy new carpet? Plus, animations are not always rule accurate.
Not all the fields were gray, I believe they all were green however I didn’t attend every regional or see every venue. If I remember correctly they were green and depending on the light it would look more like a greenish gray.

Although it may look cool, different carpet colors can be tough on the eyes, I mean I can’t stand watching Boise State football for the following reason.

I believe they replace the carpet every regional (or atleast every couple) so it wouldn’t be that hard to switch to a different color each year. I think it would be cool to have some bright colored carpet, but some people did get tired of looking at the bright white floor in 2009.
The carpet shipped with the field was green this year.

Carpet is replaced after every regional. Scraps (cut off the ends before the regional opens) are sent with the field for repairs, but by and large the carpet is too chewed up to be usable for official events. If your team wants carpet, bring something to haul it and tell the FTA you want it–that’s how a lot of offseasons get official carpet.

The field at every official event was green. It might not have been MOE green, but it was green. In fact, it was approximately a dark grass-colored green. Except, of course, on the bumps and where the field crew hadn’t fixed robot burnout marks. Oh, and on the white line.
If you’ll notice, the red and blue on the bumps in the animation didn’t exactly match the red and blue bumps on the field either.
I would suspect a return to grey carpet again next year; that’s been the standard for years, except the last two. Then again, the GDC likes to change things up “just to mess with us” (or to reflect the theme of the game and other reasons).
Perhaps you’re referring to some of the off season events? Correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that FIRST does not supply the carpet for those, in which case you’d probably be seeing the gray carpets that most teams have.

Honestly, regardless of game the green carpet just looked a lot better on field than gray… I hope they keep changing the color.
Even the carpet at Ruckus was green, I didn’t see a non-green field anywhere.
New England off-seasons were gray carpet since the teams buy a size and use it year after year, and in lighter venues it didn’t look straight up green so thinking back I couldn’t remember if it was green. Grey is the color I associate with FRC fields no matter what year.

Every (official) field I saw this year used the green carpet everyone is talking about. Personallly I liked the slight hint of color as opposed to a bright, turf like, green. Colors are a very funny thing, ask anyone who has ever painted a room in their house. What may seem like a good idea ends up being way too dark or too bright very quickly. If FIRST went to fields that were brightly colored, it could get pretty distracting. I think the way they went this past year was perfectly fine.

As embarrassing as this sounds, I flat out forgot that the fields had a slight hue of dark green. Most of the fields I’ve seen since the competition season have been on low quality TBA videos. Most scrimmage footage or robot teaser videos by teams had a gray field, so that added to the idea.

This is a very good point. I was thinking brighter might be better, but maybe a slight tone is less of an eyesore.

I had the exact same reaction since I and went as far as looking up pictures. It is natural for me to think that FRC fields are gray since they have been gray for as long as I remember.
I bet that the game would have changed drastically if we had to play on turf… :ahh:
