Buddy Climb?

the CAD isn’t cleaned up and it’s missing some reinforcement, but something like this?

An overly simplistic take for an overly simplistic strategy:

Designing and integrating such a mechanism takes nonzero time and effort.

In quals, people seem to be pretty bad about driving onto ramps or getting wrangled so the value is low. The ones that can’t manage to build a climber would be the ones least likely to drive up your ramp or get wrangled anyways.
In elims, pick robots that can climb. Getting your robot over here to climb is just as hard as getting it over here to get wrangled. Arguably harder.

Designing a mechanism for these edge cases of opportunity… enh.

The worst case scenario for a buddy climbing robot is to climb by itself, regardless of who they choose.
I thought all these teams that now have no bag would have all the time in the world to build. We’re not that team for sure.

We definitely have all the time in the world to talk about things to build.

3360 recently posted their robot reveal with a double buddy climb.
Climb starts at 1:33

If our team can get the mechanism built in time we have the potential to lift 450 lbs worth of robot off the ground. A double seems more feasible right now with our design but a triple might be possible

You wanna talk about buddy climbs? Buddy climbs?? I just hope most teams can balanced climb!

I hear a lot of teams talking about pulling off buddy climbs in practice right now.

Neat. Let’s see it on a real field in a match. I don’t think it’ll be common at all this season. Teams struggled with it in 2018 and everyone was looking head on at that bar.

A cheesecake buddy climber like 3360 posted is a really good idea, but this seems like it would be difficult to pull off in quals. You would need to have quite a few of the cheescake hooks built ahead of time and able to mount on all your alliance partners. In elims, it is easier. I wonder if they can climb with only robot hooked on. If they can, then it would make a lot more sense for quals.

If you can’t really use this idea in quals, that sorta defeats one of the main reasons to attempt this which is to get the ranking point

I think it is pretty feasible to bolt hooks on evey alliance partner for quals, we might be able to climb with just one buddy, have to work on that still

My guess is we’ll see some convergence on a buddy climb design as the season goes on just like the suction climber in ‘19. Especially with no bag.

It does look really cool. I can’t wait to see it in action.

I completely and wholeheartedly agree that you are correct simply because of your profoundly accurate and complex justifications.

My replies were meant to be (a) to the OP and (b) mildly amusing.

I know! I was so moved (and amused) by your reply! Thank you for your absolutely EPIC insight, good sir.

Don’t forget a three-robot buddy climb will be worth 75 points plus another 15 if the switch is levelled.
This can be an immense game changer in an elim match and a real Alliance killer in the first weeks of competition.

Well… perhaps two designs:

  1. an underslung single buddy climber; and
  2. a Bar-and-Hook triple buddy climber.

My two pennies’ worth!
