So my team as debating to use a rack and pinion and I was trying to see which one to buy off McMaster. Each rack has a pitch and a pitch height. We were going to buy pinions from Vex that have pitch diameters. What’s the difference between pitch and pitch height and how do we know what pitch height we need?
The “pressure angle” for the rack (assuming linear gear rack?) is the spec you need to look at.
That I got. But does pitch not matter? (Using 20 DP for both).
I’m not a gear expert, and learning by checking this stuff out, but the DP (diametral pitch) value is akin to threads per inch for bolts. So 20DP, for circular gears, is giving the rate for total teeth for a circumference. This seems to be the same as the Pitch for a linear gear. I haven’t done it, but try googling “does a 20dp gear work with 20 pitch rack?”
Oh I see thanks thanks. Will look into that
Yes pitch does matter. Gears and racks need to have the same DP and pressure angle.
