CAD training

I am the CAD and Manufacturing captain for my team. I was wondering what sort of CAD training do you do for members?

Ours CAD LEGOs in Solidworks.

On our team, we have pre-made tutorials that we present and the students follow along and ask any questions they need. We start with sketches, then features, assemblies, then drawings. It allows them to have all the skills to make a part if we need during season, but doesn’t exactly train them for how to design an FRC robot, which I am working on fixing.

If you are using Solidworks, they have built in tutorials that are pretty good for beginners.

Mostly by doing. Last year we had one mentor and two students doing CAD, and they were all teaching each other as they learned things.

This summer our technical mentor had us CAD a West Coast Drive which was due in 2-3 weeks. Part of the training process was to use plane mates and more complex tools so that the quality of the CAD was much better.

Furthermore, we usually have veteran CADders do one on one with people who want to learn which from my experience is the best way to at least give those with zero experience a basis to do a project like a WCD or some kind of mechanism for the robot.

If I had to guess for this year, we’re probably going to have vetern CADders teach the rookies the basics (like extrude cuts, boss/base, drawing, schematics, symmetry, etc.) and then have them do some kind of CAD project.

Hi,

For CAD training, Team 2530 created a series of CAD tutorials (we call “aCADemy”) to help people learn Inventor, with particular emphasis on commands most likely to be used for designing robots. Here is a C.D. link: https://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131538

This year, we are migrating to OnShape (due to how CAD is administered in the school we are affiliated with), and are using their online tutorials to learn it. Depending on how time flies, we might create a tutorial for this, too.
