CADathon 2015

A while back, I brought up an idea of a CADathon, and then until now, I’ve been planning, and I’m hopeful that this is going to work out

When: Dec 28th, 10am - 9pm PST

Where: Google hangouts.

What: People will be split into teams of 4 to 5, and they will use Google Hangouts to communicate with each other, give feedback, and submit a project as a group to complete a challenge (all groups are receiving one challenge that will be released on the day of the event).

What you need: A device that can CAD, and hopefully run Google hangouts simultaneously. Also GrabCAD with the CADathon library downloaded.

Thanks to Chak and Aaron Ng from 4159, Anand from 115, and other-Daniel from 649 for helping me with this event, and I hope to see you all there!

Sounds exciting! Could you give an example of what kind of challenges you’ll be doing?

It’s basically going to be a typical FRC game, and the job of the groups is to build a system to be able to play the game basically. But I’m not saying anything about what it is until the day of the event

Can the challenge be posted here for us all to see? And is there a way we can spectate throughout the day?

I’d love to see the teams progress and learn, step by step, how each team tackles the challenge.

Yeah, I guess I can post the challenge here (on the day of the challenge).

Spectating throughout the day… I actually never thought of that. Each group is having their own Google Hangout session, so maybe I can use its livestream function? They changed the interface, so I’m not so sure about it.

Is there an experience or software requirement for this event? I’m on our teams mechanical team but have fair knowledge of Autodesk inventor (designed basic drive-train). It would be a nice learning experience for kickoff.

nvm just looked at the form

Sounds awesome!

When and how will teams present their bots during the event?

Also a design review kind of thing would be nice so that people can learn from their mistakes.

I think at the very end of the event, there will be a mass-Google Hangout, and everyone will present their bots with the help of the screenshare function. Hope it’s not going to be too much of a hastle if many people decide to participate in this.

Could a pre-made team of 4-5 members join and compete?

For this event, the intention was to make the teams based on team number, skill level, software, and whatever is on the Google Form. So no pre-made teams unfortunately, but if things go well, I may do this again next summer, and I will definitely consider this idea.

Maybe you could try Hangouts on Air to broadcast the main hangout?

Sounds like a great idea for people to practice CAD, unfortunately I have a lot going on tomorrow. Great idea though and I hope a lot of people are going to do it. Live streaming it would be cool though, I’d like to check it out throughout the day.

Yeah, I am planning on testing live streamming sometime tonight.

Also, I’m releasing the challenge tomorrow on ChiefDelphi so be sure to check on that!

Also, there are some “open” spots left, so if you are still interested in taking part in this event, sign up in the Google Forms!
