Can a robot contact two cages at once?

A robot has to touch a cage to climb. However, my team hasn’t found any restriction on how many cages one robot can touch.

Couldn’t find either. However, I think it can’t. Won’t it be awkward.

Won’t it take away space for your alliance-mates to climb?

Also can multiple robots climb a single cage?

A robot can only climb one cage acording to the video and rules.

Which rule?

Got a reference on the rules for that?

Do you have a rule number?

I would say no since the video and the rules say that one robot can climb a cage meaning one robot, one cage.

The scoring criteria for CAGE points is “contacting a CAGE” and only contacting select additional elements, which don’t include another CAGE.

First: Video means nothing. The Manual takes priority.

Second: Cough up a rules reference.

@cgmv123 covered you with the criteria for cage points.

In the future, when you are asked for rules references, please provide them–it is theoretically possible to score 2 or even 3 robots on one CAGE, which means you’re incorrect on your one-robot-one-cage assertion.

Your robot would need to be around 1’ 6" wide without bumpers, is that worth 12 points? You would be putting a huge constraint on yourself, but I would love to see an almost effortless climb on a deep cage.

My team hasnt found anything on that but as long as your not touching the top of the cage or the chain I dont see why not.

This thread might be of interest in the near future

I was thinking about having one robot cling on to two deep cages for stability and perhaps lift another robot

From searching through every appearance of “CAGE” in the manual, that is indeed the closest thing I can find to a one-CAGE restriction. The one-CAGE interpretation is also supported by the scoring table, though, which says “off-the-ground via shallow CAGE” and “off-the-ground via deep CAGE”, with nothing to disambiguate a multiple-CAGE situation (e.g. one shallow and one deep).

Members of our team have also been suggesting that robots can only climb on one CAGE because it is “their CAGE”, but I can find no support for this notion either. They seem to be confused by section 6.3.5 about choosing the height of the CAGE.

So we cannot climb two deep cages ala Donkey Kong Jr. style?

Section 6.5.2 Robot Scoring Criteria states that to qualify for CAGE points a robot must:

  1. be in contact with a CAGE (except the anchor),
  2. not contact the carpet, and
  3. may additionally contact:
  • scoring elements
  • another ROBOT qualified for CAGE points
  • a partner ROBOT contacted by an opponent in violation of G428
  • an opponent ROBOT

From this rule, for a valid score, you can be in contact with other robots who are qualified for CAGE points (as long as those buddy robots follow these same rules).

You basically did the lifting for them, and as long as they are touching some cage, then they can get their points. There’s no rule forcing each cage to only be allowed to be scored by one robot. Therefore, it can be inferred that you could even stack robots on the same cage (given they touch the cage and don’t break any other rules).

Obviously dimensions may not be realistic for buddy climbing on the same cage, but the possibility is still there, and even if it were to happen by mistake there isn’t any regulation against a robot touching multiple cages either (getting disabled at endgame and the robot somehow touching another cage).

They may end up coming out and rewording the rule if they intended against buddy climbing or something similar.

I never thought about how the chains in DK Jr. Should be swinging similar to how the ones in ReefScape move around a lot

if you can touch two cages for a 12 point hang, you would only need one other robot to park (2 points) to reach the ranking point. could go over 14 points by any combination of other things that involves parking and one other hang.
