Hi all, our robot this year already needs 8 talons, we were wondering if a victor can be used in the 8 smaller spots?
Sure!
Yes it can.
Just make certain to use wire of the appropriate gauge for the for the breaker used to feed it.
Additionally, make sure you are aware of the limited power the <40Amp powered motor can provide. If designed correctly, you will not have an issue.
For example, our Gear intake is pivoted in and out with a 775Pro driving a 100:1 VP. The intake weighs 6.8 lb and the center of mass is 6" from the pivot point. It takes less than 9.5 amps to position the intake in or out. Thus we have it connected to a 30 Amp breaker. We could drop it to a 20 Amp, if desired, without impacting performance.
Boone,
There is no electrical rule that dictates breaker size for a motor. The breakers are sized to protect the wire size used. If you think you will be limiting the motor current by the breaker rating, that does not occur. The motor will still try to draw whatever current is expected for the parameters it is operating under. Check the motor spec sheet curves. A 20 amp breaker will not limit the current to 20 amps, it will merely open if the sustained current exceeds 20 amps.
You could also use more Talons in the 8 smaller breaker locations if you’d like to keep things consistent.
