Just wondering if it is possible to get internet at FIRST events.
It depends on your event, since FIRST doesn’t provide it themselves. Most convention centers have some sort of wi-fi, though you probably have to pay for it, and quality isn’t always great. You’re more likely to be happier tethered to someone’s smartphone with an unlimited plan than to use the ambient connection.
You’re not supposed to arrange for it (Administrative Manual 4.15, third bullet).
There is nothing said about connecting via pre-existing networks.
I interpret 4.3.1 of the Admin manual to say that any access-point style projected networks are prohibited. However, there should be no problem with a hard-tether to a data enabled smartphone. I do it every year.
Almost every event has a wireless connection available for everyone there. If you don’t mind sharing with several hundred other people, you’ll be fine.
Do not count on having an internet connection available.
Most of the events that I’ve gone to don’t have any sort of public WiFi.
