Recently my team has been considering buying parts to make 2910’s MK2 Swerve Drive Module. Would it be legal to use this for the actual competition?
Yes
Yes. The intent of the rule stating that teams may use their own designs year-to-year so long as they post them publicly is also there to allow other teams the same benefit of using previously made designs.
That said if you haven’t actually gotten a swerve running around and put the development time into the programming etc on it, even with the convenience of buying the MK2 i would highly recommend not running swerve in 2020.
I concur. If a team has never done swerve before, they have missed the cut off time for development .
Even for a team that’s on their 10th year of swerve we were dangerously close to the cut off time for swerve. I can’t imagine a new swerve team spending even less time.
What kinds of criteria do you have for deciding/feeling comfortable using it for 2020 after 10 years of experience?
This was only because we’re using a brand new CVT swerve designed this summer. If we were using 2019’s design which has been iterated over a few years we would probably feel comfortable using it again without it meeting any specific criteria.
It depends on how much time and resources you have. Given 4 or 5 students and a couple informed mentors in 3 hour class periods form now until kick-off, I think its possible. In fact, having a design is half the trouble.
prepares to be destroyed yet again
“Steal from the best, invent the rest!”
But seriously do not plan on running swerve without having used it outside of competition season first. A drivetrain will not win you a competition, but a drivetrain can most certainly LOSE you a competition!
This was really helpful. I’ll let my team know and we will make a decision. Thank you!
