CalGames 2024 will be held at Pittsburg High School with Team 5430, PirateRobolution Pittsburg High School as host. Event days: October 11-13, 2024.

A planning & event team has been working away! Please reach out to [email protected] if you are interested in volunteering in any role!

Overall replicating prior year’s (CG21-CG23) schedule sequence

  1. Two competition days (Saturday & Sunday) PLUS one evening of practices (Friday).
  2. Setup (Thursday evening + Friday daytime) + Competition (Friday evening, Saturday daytime, Sunday until mid-afternoon) + Teardown (Sunday)

Registration occurs in two tiers, early and open registration:

  • Early Registration begins May 20, and costs $300 per team, plus commitment to a volunteer slot (6+ students, 1+ adults).
Not fulfilling this commitment with no notification will disqualify the team from competing in CalGames 2025.
  • Open Registration begins on August 1 and costs $400 per team with no commitment to a volunteer slot.
  • 2nd Robot Registration will open August 22 and costs $400 per team with no commitment to a volunteer slot.

Teams are strongly encouraged to step up to help out as much as they can!

Registrations received prior to the opening of a tier will be treated as if they had been received at the exact opening date and time for that tier.

Payment must be made by September 15, 2024. See registration announcement for more details, and write [email protected] with any questions.

With Pittsburg being about an hour away from San Jose, it seems like the only options for a local off-season in the South Bay are Sunset Showdown, which has already selected its teams, or Chezy Champs, which is highly competitive and invitation-only.

I know WRRF can only hold the event at venues that offer to host the event, so I’m not blaming them, but I’m worried about not having a local off-season I can bring all my kids to compete at (exclusively travel off-seasons is expensive, especially with the whole team).

Ditto here. IDK what next year’s leadership will decide on, but there’s a good chance they won’t go to an offseason in 2024.

Subject: 2024 CalGames Logo Contest

Hi Teams,

We’re happy to announce the CalGames 2024 Logo Contest, a tradition for 10+ years at WRRF! Submissions are due to [email protected] by Monday, July 1.

Your challenge is to design an original, compelling event logo which is also:

not FIRST-derived (i.e., no FIRST logo, no FIRST 2023 game logos)
This means NO use of the official Cresendo logo. It is critical the CG24 logo be your creation completely with no borrowed art EXCEPT for WRRF logo.
incorporate the WRRF logo (PNG), WRRF Logo (SVG)
have the text “CalGames 2024” (CalGames as one word)
utilize the WRRF colors (Purple #560F6B, Gold #F0AF00, Green #006549) where appropriate
be submitted as an SVG file (we also recommend providing a PNG as reference for what the submission is supposed to look like in case the SVG does not render correctly on our end, though the SVG is what will be used for final printing)
Make sure to preview your logo at different sizes to ensure that it can scale up and down without key details being lost, keeping in mind it may be printed on a variety of materials of different sizes ranging from buttons to programs to shirts to banners.

Please submit your final graphic alongside a written statement asserting that your design is indeed original, and your name & team number (if appropriate) so we can properly credit you if you win.

By doing so, you grant WRRF permission to use your graphic, if selected, for any and all CalGames 2024 marketing and promotional purposes, and acknowledge that, we may make minor edits to the selected logo without consulting you to ensure readability before sending it off for printing.

The rest is up to you! The designer of the winning submission (selected by the WRRF Board) will receive public recognition and a free WRRF-branded item (<$75) sporting the winning logo.

If you have any questions, please let us know and we will do our best to answer them.

Sincerely,

WRRF BOD & CG24 Planning Group–

For us, the reverse: we have been doing the hour to 1.5 hour trek to SJ for CalGames for most of our existence.

However, there are ~3 to 4 hotels within 10 miles of Pitt High, and all of them tend to be cheaper than hotelling in SJ.

Subject: Volunteer Registration Open for CalGames 2024!

Hi everyone,

My name is Renee and I am the Volunteer Coordinator for CalGames this year.

Individual Volunteer Registration has opened for the event, so if you’d like to join our ensemble, please visit this form to submit your interest:

2024 CalGames Individual Volunteer Sign Ups

We are trying out a new format that we hope will simplify the volunteer registration process, so I wanted to mention a few notes:

  • There are still different sections for adults and youth ; once you fill out the form accordingly, you’ll be directed to the appropriate section.

  • The date options listed to indicate your availability are full day shifts , but please let me know of any specific timeframes that you have by noting them on the form.

  • We’d love for our volunteers to try out new roles , so you are welcome to sign up for anything and everything that you are interested in (especially in a shadow/trainee capacity).

Lastly, there are roles available for all ranges of experience , so please share this within your circles and encourage your friends and family to join in on the fun. CalGames couldn’t be a successful event for its participants without the help of all our volunteers, so the more, the merrier!

I hope you’ll sign up to “rock on” with us - please contact me if you have any questions or if I can help with anything.

Thank you,

Renee

Dear WRRF Community and Teams registered for CalGames 2024,

It is with deep regret that we must announce a change in venue for CalGames 2024. The host school, Pittsburg High School, withdrew their support for the event this week.

Currently, our replacement options are limited only eight weeks before the event. We are exploring multiple options and are very interested in any school that could host for the planned weekend of October 11-13.

We hope to have an answer quickly, but as you might expect, this is not a 24-hour process .

Any registered team can withdraw their registration. We understand and sympathize with the impact this may have on teams and our volunteers. We will notify you of the final decisions as soon as we have them.

We very much hope to still have CalGames 2024; however, at this late date, cancellation is a possibility.

Any team that could host CalGames 2024, please reach out to [email protected] as soon as possible.

Dear teams and WRRF Community

We wanted to update you on our progress to find a new venue for CalGames 2024. Unfortunately, we do not yet have a final answer.

Four options have been eliminated (team withdrew interest, date conflicts, didn’t solidify interest, etc.) in south bay and peninsula, as well as a Pittsburg middle school (just too small, half of pits would have be outside in covered area, requiring security to be hired; field gym half size for seats) and we now have only one option left in the San Ramon/Pleasanton area. However, it is not yet firm if the dates and venues are truly available at that site. We sincerely hope to hear these answers in next days. We have no other options available currently.

We had hoped to make a go/no-go decision Tuesday, 9/3, but the one last possible option is still in work.

We hope sincerely to have a final answer by the weekend.

Subject: CalGames 2024 cancelled: CalGames 2025 Bids are needed!

Dear WRRF Community and Teams,

It is with deep regret that we must tell you we are cancelling CalGames 2024. After losing access to the originally planned site, we have researched and worked with eight teams on possible venues and alternate dates. Those teams went through many hoops to try and make their site work (THANK YOU TO ALL those who tried!!).

Unfortunately, because of schedule conflicts that could not be resolved or venue facility options that didn’t support the size of CalGames, we just could not make it work.

We were now only a month out, and further exploration we thought was not viable to be able to hold a quality event.

Looking to the future, we do want to find the venue and confirm it MUCH earlier for CalGames 2025. A lot of legwork was done this year that will help CG25 planning. Thus, the CalGames 2025 Bid Template is attached! Now is the time to do the legwork, get those answers, complete it, and obtain your school’s commitment, and join the planning team for CG25. Get it down before FRC season begins in January!

CalGames 2025 dates

Dates: October 2, (evening setup field floor only 3 (setup, practice) 4 & 5
OR October 10
(setup, practice) 11, & 12

The Treasurer will be returning registration checks received (and not yet cashed) as well as refunding those who monies were deposited. In addition, the two teams who did their volunteer duty already are guaranteed a spot in CalGames 2025. The Registration contact will be in touch with each registered team about all of this.

We wish you the best for the upcoming FRC 2025 season and hope to see you all again in the fall of 2025.

And the WRRF Board of Directors extends its deepest thanks to those on the CG24 planning committee, working these past months to prepare for CalGames 2024. These events take many people to make them happen and you all are committed to making a difference for the WRRF Community. Thank you.
