Hello, we are having trouble with one of the CANCoders on our swerve modules. All of other encoders are blinking green and show up in Phoenix Tuner however this one does not show any lights and is not in Phoenix Tuner. With a voltmeter it is seen that it is getting 12 volts. It is also hot to the touch. Is it reasonable to assume that it is just fried?
Its it not tracking the magnetic field, because if it is the LED might just be bad cause we have one cancoders that works fine just has a bad LED
If it’s not showing any lights, I would suspect either the power (which you say you have checked) or a fried circuit. Given the heat (maximum rated current is 60mA), probably the latter. Is there any possibility of a short? Do you want to post a picture showing the wiring?
If it is getting hot enough that you can’t hold your finger to it, it is definitely fried. If I hazarded a guess, I’d check for any kind of short between the 12v and CAN lines or possibly if voltage was ever reversed to it.
The encoder is not showing up on CAN whatsoever which led me to believe that the issue is not just the LED.
I could try to get a photo on Thursday although from what I remember the wiring is pretty solid and not shorting.
That was my suspicion; I will double check the wiring and possible shorts on Thursday.
Thanks for your help!
Thanks. I don’t see anything obviously wrong there.
yea, had a CANcoder that also turned off suddenly. after pulling it out of its case and touching it, burned my finger. assumed it was fried as well
