CD DMs, YPP and visibility of flagged posts

I just realized I have no way of “verifying” is a person is 18 at a glance for YPP on CD. Rookie year is correlated, but then there are FTC users to consider. Ik CD keeps track of birthdays, but I think that is just the calendar day not the year.

Fundamentally I don’t want to spend a crazy amount of time trying to verify.

I like the DM feature, it definitely has good uses. Sometimes a user needs to be DMed, contact info showing is a common one, or potentially an embarrassing mistake in a post, or a non public show of support (i.e. have a green dot & don’t worry about the angsty group think).

Flagging the post that has email info or something is great and all, but now we have flagged posts as “make visible” (community request, which I agree with)

A super quick direct message to tell some presumed HS student their email is showing and they should delete the post and repost with out email (delete vs edits, the latter of which you can see) is hardly of real-world concern. but I am just wondering the best way to handle a situation of that manner (I am guessing the answer is flag it and walk away) and of a more mundane nature (i.e. an embarrassing mistake, or have a green dot) .

Or to ask my question another way, if I flag my own post in a DM (other reason, YPP), does the receiving user see the flag? I have no problem flagging, I would just rather not flag DMs left right and center because the users profile doesn’t explicitly say student or adult.
Being on the receiving end and presumed a student isn’t the best feeling either.

@Brandon_Martus is there a way for TL3s to force a post to not be allowed “make visible” when the flag reason is “personal information”?

If you edit within 5 mins of posting, the changes are not logged.

The edit history can also be removed by @Brandon_Martus, unsure if this applies to all TL4s.

If you’re concerned it may be a student, flag it.

It may make more work for mods but if it becomes a problem i’m sure we can burn that bridge when we get to it. (And yes, I know the correct saying)

I think all mods can take care of this. I’ve flagged posts for including personal information and they were able to handle it without exposing the information in the edit log.

FYI, they are logged, they just aren’t shown, unless you edit it again after that 5 minute window has passed, in which case those edits are shown in the edits logs

Just out of curiosity, are student email addresses more sensitive information than adult email addresses?

Possibly, but email all of a sudden means moderation is not a thing.

In the sense “student” is = to under 18 and you should limit contact information to under 18. Yes. The reality is if you are playing in the internet, your email address is going to get scraped regardless of age. But guess you shouldn’t make it easy.

These edits in the logs can be hidden by an admin (but still preserved) if needed.

And in response to the original topic of this thread, I believe you can just add @moderators to your DM if you want to include additional adults in a DM with a student (without flagging the post).
