The rules, for the newbies.
And the picture:
[db2f9dc5c69494589c84297bf16e04eb_l.jpg] Dr. McLurkin spoke in Springfield, MA recently about his research into large scale “Swarm Bots” . Think nature, an ant colony or a bee hive. Many individual entities doing small tasks for the good of the whole. Nice stuff!!
He spent a few minutes before the doors opened with the students of Rosie (839) and the Mechatronic Maniacs (1027), who were asked to showcase FIRST for the public at the event.
As always, the deadline is nominally Sunday at midnight Eastern.
Go!

He may talk about swarm bots, but when he sees a bot, HE swarms right on over!
Dr. McLurkin: “Is there any way you can reduce the size of your robot and make about 100 more?”
Student thinking: “Give us a week.”
Dr. McLurkin: “Wonderfu. Your robot has some really great features. But those bumpers will never pass inspection.”
Printed on the card:
“Whoso pulleth out this master link of this drivetrain and chain is rightwise ruler of the robot”
[You break it, you own it]
Dr. James: Well, I’m always quite interested in group mentalities for swarm robotics. One group that has fascinated me is rat swarms. Do you think I can find any in that rat’s nest of wiring you have?
“Ah, so this bot comes up to Billfred’s office at 11:59 PM every day that he’s forgotten to post the caption contest results?”
“Yeah, we have to change the battery every day”

“Hold on. It uses how much power?”
“Enough to be illegal in 16 states and 254 local jurisdictions.”
“Not including this one?”
“Of course it’s illegal in this jurisdiction.”
smiles thats a nice robot you got there!

…and there are steel bars hidden in this bumper to stop us from flipping over.
You can keep a secret can’t you Dr. McLurkin.

Mentor: “That is how you do that”
Student: “Okay, I think I get that but how would I do that”
insert whatever process for “that”
Dr. M: Whaddaya mean it can’t fly?
Student: Well, it can , but we don’t have FAA approval just yet.
2nd Student: And we have 84 more just like it. They pick apples for us.
Dr. M: “Have you ever heard of swarm robotics? It’s when robots work together, each doing different tasks towards one overarching goal.”
Students: “Oh, no we haven’t! That sounds neat!”
FIRST: cries silently in corner
