Chain covers for the 2024 season

My team has heard some rumors about this so; Are chains and chain sprockets required to be covered this season? If so is it the entire chain or just the sprocket.

There is no rule requiring chains to
be covered.

It’s a question of safety. The dangerous part is around the sprocket, as getting a finger caught between the sprocket and chain is a good way to lose that finger. You want to evaluate your chains and sprockets with that in mind. If it exposed, on the exterior of your robot? Is it some place near where you might put your hands to lift the robot or manually move an arm? Think through those with respect to your design, and if it seems that fingers are likely to end up near it, put a cover over the sprocket.

Thank you for this. Only two of the chains on our robot are usually outside of the bot and thankfully those two are the easiest to cover.

In addition to the safety issues, you may want to consider covering any chains that might be in your note pathway— a chain could easily grab and gouge notes, which could be a tech foul and potentially cause the chain to jump off.
