Chassis Clearance

Just going to ask about this one in a new thread. How high off the ground do you expect most robots will be? Because most other competitions, they are as low as possible, but this competition involves robots possibly lifting from underneath your robot. Any comments? Maybe even how high your robot will be??

Im pretty sure we won’t be more than 1 inch, and perhaps as low as possible. The plan at this point certainly seems to include leaving one side of our wheel exposed for climbing ramps however.

Yes it is important to be higher off the ground in order to be lifted up, but if you are using standard bumpers they have to be 2.5" above the ground which limits how high up your robot can actually be… Our team is not worried about climbing another robot so we are still going to be close to the ground

I see. Thanks for the input. I suppose our design will have to be altered slightly, for the lower robots. Then again robots can drive on to us. hmmm… Lots to ponder still.

no problem… but you still have to think that you only have 2 inputs right now… there will be many teams though that will focus on being able to get up a ramp or be lifted

If you want to be lifted make a handle or high side or two, other than that if you want to be purely offensive on the rack and nothing else then a low robot and the same goes if you are going to be the one doing the lifting. But also have a back up plan in case all of your alliance for one match is going to be purely offensive or defensive, lift or be lifted. Have someone on the alliance commit to offense or defense prior to the match so the other alliance doesn’t have open scoring oppurtunities.

A low side may actually be preferable for lifting (assuming the lift can still fit beneath it). The higher the side, the higher the lift has to travel (and the greater amount of its maximum range) before it contact and begins to lift the actual robot.
For example. If a lift is designed to go 5" high, but the bottom of the robot’s frame is 3" high, the bottom of the robot’s wheels will only be 2" high when the lift is fully raised.

yeah yeah that is true we thought about that. Let hope we get some but not too much clearance lol
