we used this in the past:

it was a bit sluggish, but it did the trick.
If you really must have a chatroom, I would suggest something like IRC versus a webbased client.
And if it must be web based, why not just put in one of those java applets?
My experience with web based chat is that it is generally clunky and otherwise not fun.
